July 2018 MAINE COASTAL NEWS Page 19. Lobster Boat Racing - Boothbay & Rockland

that have not raced before: and at Boothbay we had Devyn Campbell J. H. DEXTER [32’, wood, 130-hp Chrysler]; Andrew Hawke’s NOR’WESTER [Young Brothers 33, 300-hp John Deere]; Jacob Noyes’ SEA YAH [13’ Mini-Hawk, 25-hp Evinrude]; Jason Chipman’s MISS AMITY [Osmond 42; 700-hp Scania]; and Justin Papkee’s new PULL ‘N’ PRAY [Wayne Beal 40; 550- hp Isuzu]. At Rockland: Shawn Howard’s GLADIATOR [Wayne Beal 40; 850-hp Caterpillar]; Ryan Ames’ RED RIPPAH [19’ Starcraft, 75-hp Mercury]; Erik Waterman’s SEA STAR [Repco 37, 300-hp John Deere]; Dillion Ames’ SWEET ESCAPE [34’ Foy Brown, wood, 275-hp Detroit]; Colby Oakes’ TRIPLE X [Mitchell Cove 35, 700- hp Detroit]; and Steven Osgood’s VENOM [Mussel Ridge 28; 300-hp Sisu]. VENOM had been a dominate boat in Diesel Class C from 2005 to 2015, but has been absent the last two years. With her new owner, I am sure we will see a lot more of her now. Now who was missing? Billy Bob

Faulkingham’s 51; his father Patrick Faulk- ingham’s MARGARET E. Ed Torosian’s MS. ROSE from New Hampshire; and Nick Wiberg’s MISS KATIE; Shawn Alley’s LIT- TLE GIRLS [28’ Calvin Beal Jr.; 514 Ford] . Genevieve McDonald’s HELLO DARLIN’ [Holland 32, 220-hp Izusu] was a no show, but she came to Rockland with her new twin babies. Bruce Engert’s THUNDERBOLT [South Shore 30; 621 Chevrolet] was not ready, but Bruce, Sr. had just had bypass surgery and just could not get everything done. They did have the bottom modifi ed by Custom Composites of Bath, who took the steps out. With a great day at hand, and sign-ups

done for the 46 entrants, it was off to the fi nish line fl oat. We are always hoping for more entrants

in the Gasoline Classes and hopefully a cou- ple more will be out before the Stonington races. There were no entrants in Class A (4 & 6 cylinder 24 feet and over) and Class D (V-8, 376 to 540 cid, 28 feet and over) and just two in Class B (V-8 up to 375 cid, 24 feet and up), and one each in C (V8, 376 to 525 cid, 28 feet and over) and E (V-8, Over 525cid, 28 feet and over, Superchargers/ Turbos) so they were all run down the course at the same time. It was a close race between BLACK DIAMOND and BUD & DAWN until Steve hit the throttle on BUD & DAWN and all the ears in the harbor perked up as she streaked for the fi nish line. In the Wooden Boat Races, and with

just one boat in Wooden Boat A (Any hp, up to 35 feet 11 inches) he was combined with Wooden Boat B (Any hp, 36 feet and over) and automatically would win his class. There were two competitors in Race B, Vance Bunker’s SARI ANN [42’Johns

Bay Boat; 660-hp Volvo] who faced off against EVANGELINE. It was a close race, but SARI ANN slowly slipped ahead for a couple of boat length lead at the fi nish. Now came the Diesel Classes, and in

the fi rst race, Class A (Up to 235 hp, 24 to 31 feet) there were no entrants. As there was just one entrant Matt Carter’s HOWARD [Calvin Beal 34; 200-hp Caterpillar] in Class B (Up to 235 hp, 32 feet and over) he was combined with the three entrants in Class C (236 to 335 hp, 24 to 33 feet) and given fi rst for his class. When the fl ag dropped LAST DESIGN was off with Adam Kimball’s

A great shot of Steve Johnson’s BUD & DAWN just getting by Andrew Taylor’s BLUE EYED GIRL in the Fastest Lobster Boat Race.

MISS ATTITUDE [Holland 32; 265-hp John Deere] trying to keep up, but in vain. Most who follow the races knew there was going to be a battle in Class G (436 to 550 hp, 28 to 35 feet) with Dana Beal’s RIGHT STUFF [Libby 34; 500 hp Cummins] and Steve Carver’s ANOTHER DIRLS. As they came up the course RIGHT STUFF (38 mph) had the lead by a boat length with ANOTHER DIRLS (34 mph) second and just off his stern was HAPPY HOUR. In Class H (436 to 550 hp, 36 feet and over) the competition was going to be tough, but it was all Dean Beal’s MISS NORMA [Wayne

Beal 36; 480-hp Cummins]. Chris Smith’s MISTY was the only entrant in Class I (551 to 700 hp, 28 to 35 feet) so he was combined with Class J (551 to 700 hp, 36 feet and over) and this was going to make for an interesting battle. The dominate boat in Class J was Heather Thompson’s GOLD DIGGER, but did DEAR ABBIE, have anything for her? GOLD DIGGER took the right side and MISTY the left and created the “Battle of the Scania.” When the fl agged dropped they both shot up the course. At the fi nish it was
