SUMMER SOFT DRINKS

As the summer season arrives, people tend to socialise more and the longer nights mean they can stay out longer. Soft drinks featured in over half of all ‘with food’ occasions and grew share in 2017 . It remained the lead drinks category ahead of hot drinks and alcohol, highlighting its broad reach.

It’s important to be aware that 72% of guests would order soft drinks specials if highlighted on the menus, so it’s key for operators to feature soft drinks more in food occasions. 80% of guests like staff to recommend drinks that complement their meal, so operators need to ensure staff are aware of which drinks go with the food types that are more typically eaten throughout this season, such as barbecued food, salads etc. Ensuring you have a range that matches these foods and promoting these summer specials, such as pairing the caramel tones of a Pepsi Max with a charcoaled burger straight off the BBQ, you will be able to take advantage of the seasonal sales on offer.

Salads are a staple of the warmer summer months and tend to have fresh and more delicate flavours. So, for a drink that is less overpowering, try a delicate, crisp-tasting J2O Spritz Peach & Apricot or Apple &

Watermelon that will complement the fruity flavours of the salad. 7UP Free’s lemon and lime flavour is another great summer pairing drink for the summer, for the same reason. Lastly, the fruitiness of J2O Orange & Passionfruit or Apple & Mango also goes well with salads, especially those that have a stronger vinaigrette or sauce, as it balances well with a slightly stronger flavour.

Britvic’s top tips for summer

1) Make the most of groups Don’t miss out on the extra footfall and larger groups in outlets over the summer. Create offers to encourage trade-up and recommend seasonally paired signature drinks that add to the experience and occasion.

2) The importance of presentation The minimal extra effort of creating a visually appealing summer mixed drink or cocktail with enhanced flavour, enticing garnish, in an attractive glass is far outweighed by the trade-up opportunity it presents, and is more likely to inspire repeat purchase.

3) Link seasonal soft drinks with food With sales likely to increase across all key categories, make sure they’re helping to boost each other by

creating cross-category promotions or training bar staff to suggest drink pairings that complement the summer dish guests order.

4) Don’t forget about families Busy parents are likely to be out and about with the kids over the summer holidays, so make sure you’re offering a welcome break during the day and ensure your range includes plenty of options for kids of all ages.
