Hare for

Harleston is Here!

THE campaign to have a Harle- ston Hare over the summer has been successful and she will be unveiled, sitting on a plinth out- side St John’s Church, on Sun- day 24th June, the official start of the GoGoHares Trail around Norfolk. The exciting initiative to raise

money for the local charity, Break, sees beautifully decorat- ed hares located all around Nor- wich and the county, with just a few in South Norfolk. It will help put Harleston on the map and draw people into the area. We have produced a Welcome To Harleston leaflet, paid for by many of the local businesses, to

encourage the visitors to stop awhile. Our thanks go to ScribblyRoo,

the local artist who designed and painted Harleston Hare. She incorporated many locally sig- nificant elements such as Reden- hall Church, the River Waveney, magpies and our beloved swifts. Can you find them all? See more of her beautiful work at www. scribblyroo.co.uk. Thanks also to all those businesses and indi- viduals who have given dona- tions to make this possible. We have Harleston Hare till

September 8th when she will be auctioned, with all the others, to raise money to enable Break to continue its valuable work with children at risk or with disabili- ties by providing children’s homes, fostering service and other support. You can still support this ini-

tiative and Break by donating online at www.uk.virginmoney- giving.com/GoGoCountyHare but make sure you click on the third box, where it says Bringing the GoGoHares Trail to Harles- ton. Or put a donation in one of the Break collection tins around town. Further information on www. visitharleston.org.uk,

Harleston Garden Club

HILARY Reid’s talk to Harles- ton Garden Club in May was called “Recycling in the Gar- den” - but it might also have been described as a mini-master- class in thrifty gardening! Mrs Reid shared a very large box of common or household items ingeniously adapted for garden use at a fraction of the cost of products and tools one might purchase at the garden centre or hardware store. While many of us may hang

old CDs from beanpoles as pigeon scarers, or start off our beans and mangetouts in the cardboard middle of toilet tissue rolls, how many have thought to use the amputated fingers of old rubber gloves as protection from the tops of bamboo canes? Or, on the day after bonfire night, to collect the sticks of spent rockets as stakes for, say, indoor plants? They do form part of Mrs Reid’s gardening ethos and practice from which she offered a whole

gamut of suggestions. For example – food portion contain- ers as mini propagators: liquid detergent containers or similar small containers, bottom end removed, as greenhouse or pot- ting scoops: larger plastic bot- tles, minus bottom and top ends, as sleeves for bare arm protec- tion when blackberrying: the same bottles with holes punched at the top inverted as slow release watering devices for unattended plants: an umbrella frame with cover removed as climbing frame for sweet peas: the metal ring from a discarded car hubcap as support for tall plants: coloured duct tape around wooden hand tool handle to make sure you can find it more readily when lost in the flower border or other undergrowth: a kitchen sieve to scatter compost lightly over newly sown seed. The list went on! ‘Instead of buying horti-grit which has been extracted from

the ground”, said Mrs Reid, “we can beneficially crumble broken china and use that instead” (which may not be without some danger!) Small panes of glass or plastic can be pegged together as mini cold frames. The elasticity of cast off tights makes the fab- ric perhaps better as plant ties than string or wire; the cut off legs of tights, filled with stones/ small rocks, are convincing rockery building material. An old table fork is perfect for lift- ing seedlings from tray to pot or box. Used teabags are better for drainage instead of stones in flower pots. Best of all, perhaps, was the use of a (de-footed) sock as winter wrist warmer which, when hands are dirty/muddy, can double as emergency nose- wipe if one’s nose begins to drip in the winter weather! We had a good laugh at the inventiveness of it all and took away many use- ful and thrifty ideas. Many thanks, Mrs Reid. Instead of the monthly lecture

format in June, Harleston Gar- den Club arranged an afternoon visit to Howards’ Nurseries at Wortham. On July 10th Mr Howard Norton will be speaking about growing delphiniums, a plant he has long been growing and showing. Visitors are very welcome to this talk in Harles- ton’s London Road Church Hall: doors open 7pm for 7.30pm talk. The visitor fee of £2 includes tea/coffee/biscuits. For further information call Club Secretary, William Thomas, on 01379 853483, or committee member Lesley Rock on 854897.
