Harleston Wives Group

THE final meeting for wives for this season was on May 22nd. It was the AGM followed by a Beetle Drive. Daphne took the meeting as Jill was away for her holidays. She said it had been a very successful year with a very good programme, and also very good attendance from members at the meetings. A new committee was select-

ed with a few changes. Ann, our secretary, reminded us of all the various entertainment and talks from this year which ranged from Children in care, to local companies telling us their histo-

ry and showing us their prod- ucts, horse welfare, bingo, car- pet bowls and many others. A game of beetle drive fol-

lowed with prizes for the highest score and a booby for the lowest. Rosemary won the bonus ball

and raffle prize winners included Avril, Shirley and Cathy. Next season starts on Septem-

ber 4th with a new programme already being put together. Come along, we are a friendly group and a good way to get yourself out and meet old friends and make new ones.

Bungay High School News CONGRATULATIONS to Year 10 student Harvey Sayer who was awarded the Trevor Collyer Cup by Bungay Town Council at a ceremony in May. The cup is awarded annually to a young person who has given outstand- ing service or commitment. Harvey has shown exceptional commitment and skill in sport. He has represented our school in a wide range of sports and has shown particular commitment in football. Out of school, he plays for Colchester United FC and the England U15 football team. He made his debut for England earlier this year in a match against Belgium. Harvey’s skill, coupled with his positive atti- tude and determination makes him a very worthy recipient of the Trevor Collyer Cup. Twelve of our Year 9 students

had the great opportunity to take part in a three day archaeologi- cal dig in association with the University of Cambridge. They were contributing to real aca- demic research for the Archaeol- ogy department’s investigation into what remnants lay beneath currently occupied rural settle- ments. Over two (mostly sunny!) days at designated sites in Blythburgh, teams of students plotted and dug out a test pit to specific requirements and con- ducted their own archaeological investigation using specialist techniques and equipment. Notes and reports were made at regular intervals, with any find- ings being bagged up and stored by the University. The final day was spent at the University of Cambridge, with the opportuni- ty to share findings and partici- pate in lectures at the campus. The students were given a guid- ed tour of Downing College and the opportunity to ask questions about university life. The par- ticipants are all now in the pro- cess of finalising their individual written assignments, which will be marked by academics at the University. At the end of May, 80 Year 13

students and staff gathered at Rookery Park Golf Club to cel- ebrate the end of the students’ Sixth Form education at Bungay High School. The students have been working hard in prepara- tion for their examinations and the evening allowed them some time to enjoy relaxing with each other as well as celebrating. For some students who have been with each other since the Recep- tion Class at Primary School, it was a sad farewell! Rookery Park provided the group with an excellent meal and the students enjoyed dancing until late in the

evening. Earlier in the evening, presentations were made by the Sixth Form Team and Will Bind- er and Eleanor Baker finished their tenure as Head Boy and Head Girl with farewell speech- es. We wish all the students good luck for their exams and best wishes for their future edu- cation and careers. A team of Bungay High stu-

dents competed in the Panathlon North Suffolk Multisport Finals in Lowestoft. Over 60 young people took part in the close-run pan-disability event. Bungay High fought off tough competi- tion, finishing in bronze posi- tion. Our students were superb in their behaviour and efforts throughout the whole competi- tion. The team comprised of Andrew Flatt, Zach Thorndyke, Jenna Hatcher, Polly Collyer, Dyllan Francis, Elijah Chap- man, Darcy White, James Thur- ston, Saffron Nichols, Kelsie Dyer and Alex Sargeant. Stu- dent Zack Thorndyke, said, “What a nice accomplishment for the school, this is the most fun we have had in ages. It doesn’t matter that we didn’t win, it is the friendship and teamwork shown that counts.” Catherine Wiltshire Associate Headteacher

TEACHER Training. One of the ways in which the best organisa- tions continue to move forward is by associating themselves with leading edge research and to engage in training the next generation. In the world of med- icine, teaching hospitals like our very own Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital do just this. The same benefits are to be gained through schools working with Teacher Training organisa- tions including UEA and employment-based routes. This year we have gained enormously from the five student teachers who have worked across a num- ber of subject areas including Religious Studies, Geography, Art, English and History. Ben La Tour, trainee Reli-

gious Studies teacher, said “I cannot express just how wel- coming and continually support- ive all members of staff have been and continue to be at ASHS. Thank you for allowing me the privilege of teaching your pupils.” Tara Goodwin, trainee Eng-

lish teacher, said “I am over- whelmed by the welcome I have received from the staff and sup- port they provide for every sin- gle student. The students are a credit to the school – they are talented and inspiring individu- als who I know will go on to do great things.” Community Litter Pick. On

Friday 11th May, the A Team armed themselves with litter pickers and rubbish bags and

headed onto the streets of Harleston and the Rec. It was in response to the South Norfolk Council initiative; the ‘Big Lit- ter Pick’ to keep our villages and towns clean and tidy. The following weekend our

school council students also took part in the initiative, with both groups of students receiv- ing £20 to be spent on projects within school. GCSE Exam breakfasts. We

are enormously grateful to our local business community who

have supported our Year 11 GCSE breakfasts this year. The East of England Coop, Pepper- ells Meats and The Broken Egg have all generously donated sup- plies to ensure our students head into their exams having had a good breakfast. As I write, exams are well underway and we are absolutely delighted that every student, without excep- tion, has been in school for every exam; we are incredibly proud of them all.
