Town Talk Walkers meet

to try routes WALKERS of all ages and abilities met at All Saints’ Church to help launch a circular walks leaflet. On a sunny afternoon in May

walkers enjoyed a picnic lunch at the church before going on one of two walks – one short and one long. The Rev Mandy Young said:

“The longer walk was led by Helen and Brian Knell. Helen, on behalf of the Kent Wildlife Trust, had been responsible for trying out and then writing up the walks for the leaflets, with the help of several other local walkers.” After the walks there was an out-

door act of worship in the church- yard, using the Snodland prayer stones. The glossy leaflet, Wildlife

Walks, has been developed by the trust in partnership with All Saints’ as part of a Heritage Lot- tery-funded project to repair the ancient church. It includes notes on the level of difficulty of each route and points of interest. There is also information about

flowers and birds to look out for. The leaflets are available from

Snodland Library in the High Street or All Saints’ Church which is open from 2pm to 4pm every Saturday until the end of Septem- ber.

Izzy’s dog show raises £1,300 to fund research

MORE than 150 dogs took part in the dog show to raise funds for the Cure Parkinson’s Trust, raising £1,309 for the charity. As reported in previous issues of

Town Talk, Izzy King, of Brook Lane, Snodland, whose grandad, Bob Barnes, suffers from the dis- ease, raised more than £2,100 walking from Snodland to Kings Hill last year and received the Young Fundraiser of the Year award. Twelve-year-old Izzy was helped

by her mum, Lucy, to run the fun dog show at Ryarsh Village Hall and playing fields. She wrote in the programme:

“My granddad has Parkinson’s dis- ease and it’s horrible to watch him suffering every day. He even strug- gles to put his shoes on. “Me, mum and my brother and

all our dogsmoved inwith himand we are his full-time carers so that he can live in his own home. “Iwant to raisemoney to fund re-

search to find a cure to make tablets to help slow down the dis- ease, so other people don’t have to

go through what my granddad is going through. “It’s probably too late to make

my granddad better, but we can still help other people fromthis hor- rible disease.” Lucy said that, despite the rain

the show went very well and she thanked the sponsors for support- ing the many classes and provid-

ing wonderful gifts and prizes. She added: “It was a real family

event and the feedback was won- derful. We have been asked to make it an annual event.” The supreme champion was a

Leonberger called Pia, owned by ClareOsborne fromSittingbourne, who is pictured with Izzy King and Bob Barnes.

TWO men who have worked tire- lessly to help Scouting in Snodland have been given prestigious awards – one posthumously. The Kent Association of Local

Councils (KALC) Awards, which are supported by the High Sheriff of Kent, the chairman of Kent County Council and theMayor ofMedway, were presented to Peter Byrne and the family ofMartinHomer at Snod- land annual townmeeting. Steve Cameron, the chairman of

the 1st Snodland Scout Group, spoke about bothmen. Mr Byrne, he said, is Snodland

born and bred andwas a Scout be- fore joining the Army and serving in Northern Ireland, Iraq, Germany and other countries. Whilst in Germany he recon-

nected with the Scout movement and became a Cub Scout leader and District Commissioner for the children of service personnel based in Germany. When he left the Army, his love of Scouting con- tinued and in 1995 he took the role ofGroup Scout leader in Snodland. Mr Cameron continued: “During

this time he has taken our young people to camps all over the UK and Europe and as far away as the Czech Republic and Poland. He

has given those young people op- portunities they may not otherwise have experienced. “Even after a battle with cancer

his enthusiasmhas not diminished. The example he set has encour- aged many of our Scouts to stay within the movement and become leaders themselves. In the last 12 months Peter has taken on a role as a governor at The Holmesdale School. “For of all the above and more,

he deserves this award.” Mr Cameron said that Mr Homer

was a dedicated family man, but this did not stop himfrombeing in- volved in the community. He was a governor at Snodland

Church of England Primary School and started coming to Scouting events to support his daughterwith the Scout waste paper collections. “I asked him to become a mem-

ber of the Scouts’ fundraising com- mittee,” said Steve.

“He agreed to give it a try and

became a vital part of the team. He was part of the catering team that went to camps in the UK and Eu- rope and he was ourMr Fix-it. “Scouting became a massive

part of his and Karen’s life.Wemiss him as a colleague but, more im- portantly, as a good friend. He sadly passed away after a short ill- ness. Martin’s family have kindly agreed to accept this posthumous award.”
