ways:vi
• Some men do not get an erection at all
• Some men get an erection, but cannot keep it long enough for sex
• Some men get an erection, but it is not hard enough for sexvi
For some men with ED, it can be diffi cult to get or keep an erection every time they try to have sex. For others, symptoms can happen just once in a
while.vii
Generally, ED is due to physical causes, psychological causes or use of certain types of
medication.vi The main physical cause of ED is when not enough blood is fl owing into the penis, so a man cannot get and keep an erection when he is sexually
stimulated.viii
Smoking, high cholesterol and lack of exercise can cause this problem, as well as high blood pressure and diabetes.ix,x
ED can sometimes be caused by
different health conditions including: vi, vii
• Heart and circulation problems, which reduce the fl ow of blood to the penis
• Injury to, or disease of, the penis nerves
• Low levels of the male hormone testosterone
• Injury to, or disease of, the penis or surrounding areas
• Mental health problems, such
as depression and anxiety, or relationship issues
• Surgery to the penis or the surrounding areas (eg, prostate surgery)
• Lifestyle issues, such as stress, smoking, alcohol and recreational drug abuse
You should consider possible causes of ED, such as undiagnosed depression, anxiety, excessive alcohol use and taking certain medicines. Examples of classes of medicines that cause ED include diuretics, anti-hypertensives, corticosteroids, anticonvulsants and recreational drugs. Whilst it may be appropriate to supply the product, you should also provide lifestyle advice and recommend a follow-up with a doctor.
