INSTITUTE OF REFRACTORIES ENGINEERS TRAINING DAY 2017 'DESIGN OF MONOLITHIC LININGS'

The training day was held on 8th November at Barnsley. This is the tenth annual training day the Institute has held and it was attended by over thirty people from companies in UK and mainland Europe. The theme of the day was ‘Design of Monolithic Linings’ and was concerned with various aspects of design so that an overall refractory lining which can then perform well in service.

The day was opened by new IRE President Jan Theron who welcomed everyone and was followed by Sam Franklin who revisited topics such as heat flow calculations in lining design, revisiting some previous training days to remind us of the relevance of these issues in achieving a good design.

One of the key aspects in a successful monolithic design is to have the correct anchors. Sébastien Juillard of Anchors spoke about the design of anchors, the selection of alloys for different service conditions and the manufacturing methods and why these are important in anchor performance.

Sam Franklin then described various detailed aspects of the design process with examples of common errors that are made and how to avoid them. This was followed by an exercise where groups of people had to select appropriate designs for a lining for a thermal oxidiser. There were considerable design challenges to overcome and there was much discussion of how to best achieve a good design.

In the afternoon, Paul Walker described the design of moulds and shutters, including a discussion of the different materials for making moulds and examples of when each one may be used. Hong Peng then explained why dryout of castables can be problematic including some very dramatic video and explained how dryout schedules may be optimised.

We received very positive feedback from the day, with people describing the course as very useful and informative.

The training day for 2018 is already in planning, we hope it will be as successful.
