Issue 3 2018 - Freight Business Journal
///MULTIMODAL PREVIEW
Retailing, disruption and the youth of today This year’s Multimodal will discuss the vital logistics issues
of the day. The blurring line between retailers and logistics providers, and the need to recruit more young people into the supply chain industry are two of the pressing issues to be debated at Multimodal 2018. The effects of disruptive new
technologies in logistics, and developments arising from modal shiſt will also be discussed at the free-to-attend show, taking place at the Birmingham NEC from the 1st to 3rd May 2018.
Now in its 11th year, the three-
day event has once again teamed up with the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT), the Freight Transport Association (FTA), and the United Kingdom Warehousing Association (UKWA) for its workshop and seminar programme. “With
Brexit imminent and
disruptive new technologies affecting the traditional supply chain model, it is now more
important than ever to listen and learn from the experts,” said Robert Jervis, logistics portfolio director at organisers, Clarion Events. “Our workshop and seminar
programme features over 20 panels and workshops led by dozens of industry leaders, debating the most important issues facing our industry today.” Tom Thornton, president of
the Irish International Freight Association (IIFA), joins Peter MacSwiney, chairman of Agency Sector Management (ASM), Robert Keen, BIFA director general and Robert Windsor, BIFA’s policy

leading logistics companies, including Malcolm Logistics, Heathrow Airport, Dachser, Menzies Aviation, American Airlines, Freightliner, Port of Dover, Samskip, Associated British Ports, Kuehne + Nagel, P&O Ferries, and GB Railfreight, have already signed up for the 2018 event. Last year, the UK and Ireland’s
leading logistics and transport show welcomed a record-breaking 9,449 specialists from across the
supply chain industry, a figure expected to be surpassed this year as the show has done every year since it was founded. Among this year’s sessions, CILT
has put together a panel that will explore how to attract talent into the supply chain sector, which will undoubtedly need reinforcement in years to come. Transport for the North
joins the event for the first time, with a session looking at how international connectivity is crucial to driving economic growth across the region. Peter Ward, chief executive of
the UKWA will be chairing a day of sessions looking at patterns of global trade, as well as discussing, with big e-commerce players such as Amazon and Alibaba, the blurring lines between retail and logistics. Elsewhere, continuing our
focus on air freight, Chris Welsh , FTA director of global European Policy and Ariaen Zimmerman Cargo iQ executive director have invited colleagues from across the sector to discuss newly launched shipper KPIs and the challenges that lie ahead. Specialist motoring offences
solicitors Richard Silver and Alison Mafam have joined forces with logistics systems specialist Paul Jorgensen to deliver an insightful session on how to avoid legal pitfalls when driving for work. They will explore the interplay

between safe transport systems and driving offences and cover key areas where practice and law can collide. Now in their fourth year, the FTA Multimodal Awards 2018 reward
best-in-class across air, road, rail, and maritime services, as well as a Young Logistics Professional, and a Shipper of the Year. Nominations for both
awards can be made online at
awards.multimodal.org.uk, and judges include David Wells, chief executive, FTA; Ariaen Zimmerman; Peter MacSwiney; Stephen Carr, commercial director at Peel Ports; Robert Jervis; and Dave Howorth, executive director, SCALA Consulting Group. “Recognising excellence and
showcasing best practice helps to ensure our industry continues to innovate, and we urge companies to take a few minutes to nominate themselves and their suppliers so that we can celebrate those achievements,” says Jervis. The winners will be announced
at a gala dinner on 1 May at the VOX in Birmingham, at the close of the first day of Multimodal 2018. This year sees the launch
of Multimodal Americas, which will be co-located with The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA)’s Air Cargo Forum in Toronto, Canada on 16- 18 October. The very first Multimodal West
Africa was held in Lagos, Nigeria on 23-25 January, providing valuable networking events to freight communities around the world.
