DFDS to acquire Turkish ro ro giant

DFDS is to acquire Turkey’s largest freight ferry operator, UN Ro-Ro, subject to regulatory approval, giving it a significant presence in the Mediterranean for the first time. Danish shipping and logistics


group will buy 98.8 % of the shares in the shipping company from Turkish private equity companies Actera and Esas for €950 million.


UN Ro Ro currently has five


routes connecting Italy and France with Turkey, 12 ships and operates its own terminals in Trieste and Pendik, Istanbul. It also serves Toulon in France, Bari Italy), Patras (Greece) and Mersin and Ambarli in Turkey. DFDS’s current sole route in


the region is between France and Tunisia. UN Ro Ro also operates


Pentalver opens


London Gateway extension


Pentalver Transport has officially opened its expanded container facility at DP World London Gateway. Pentalver, a subsidiary of


Genesee & Wyoming, which also owns rail operator Freightliner, opened the first phase in 2013. The expanded site adds 40% additional capacity and


includes loaded and empty container storage, reefer and dry container maintenance and repair, transport and cargo handling. DP World UK chief executive Chris Lewis said: “Phase two of the development has added additional capacity to the vital operations and services


that


Pentalver offers to our port users and customers. It highlights the commitment it has made and the


commercial success achieved since opening the first phase of operations in November 2013.”


Thanet in talks to revive Ramsgate


Thanet Council says that talks have been going on with


Seaborne Freight,


Ostend. It follows a statement by


a


company set up by managers of the Eurotunnel-owned MyFerryLink operation, about reviving a freight-only service between Ramsgate and


Ostend mayor Johan Vande Lanotte last year that the new service would start operation by 1 March this year. Thanet Council leader Bob Bayford says that, despite the


Finnlines extends Spain- Zeebrugge service to Scotland


Finnlines has extended its Spain- Zeebrugge service to Scotland, adding round-trip sailings between Bilbao and Rosyth in addition to its existing services between Bilbao and Hull, Teesport, Tilbury and Gothenburg. The service is operated with


modern ro ro vessels able to carry all


trailer types, including containers, mobile loads and


breakbulk. Deck heights and ramp strength are suitable for a variety of oversized and overweight cargoes. The carrier said that


synchronised transhipment of cargo makes it possible to connect any port in the loop with a maximum transit time of five days. Finnlines says this is far faster


than any existing connection by road, rail or sea.


Hull-Amsterdam link gets underway


Samskip inaugurated its new three- times-a-week Amsterdam-Hull container on 21 March with the first call of the 340teu THEA II at the


Dutch port’s Amsterdam Container Terminal (ACT). Services depart Amsterdam on Mondays, Wednesdays and

continuing on a three-vessel, six times-a-day service for accompanied freight. One of the ships identified for the route is the fomer MyFerryLink Nord Pas De Calais freighter, which however has since been


deployed by Naviera Armas on a Canary islands route. Since the end of the

A2B starts Teesport service


Dutch short sea operator A2B- online has acquired an additional 500teu container vessel to introduce a new three days a week service from Rotterdam to Teesport from May. The new service operates


from the Broekman Distriport terminal which is located in the middle of a cluster of companies chemical in the Botlek area of Rotterdam and will provide a direct link to the chemical


Saturdays. ACT is operated by TMA Logistics in which Hutchison Ports is a 50% shareholder. TMA has a variety of general cargo terminal operations together with warehousing, shipping, logistics and project cargo activities at three sites in Amsterdam and one in

sailings per week from Moerdijk in the south Netherlands to Teesport and Blyth, along with 11 sailings per week from Moerdijk to Immingham and from Moerdijk to London Thamesport. The latter service was recently


increased to four sailings a week, with the call of the 508teu MS A2B Spirit.

FedEx Freight president and chief executive Michael Ducker will retire on 15 August. Ducker took the helm at the forwarding arm of the global express logistics giant in 2014 aſter spending close to 40 years at FedEx Express. His successor will be named later.


CEVA has officially opened a new multi-user site in Penang, Malaysia. Situated within the Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone Phase IV, the 70,000 sq ſt facility is close to Penang International Airport and Penang Bridge, connecting the island to mainland Malaysia. It will house under one roof CEVA’s contract logistics and freight management teams for Malaysia as well as its global supply chain solutions control tower teams who support its largest customers.


CEVA Logistics is to launch an initial public offering of around 1.3bn Swiss francs (about £960m) on the Swiss SIX Exchange. It said the objective was to accelerate the company’s growth and margin expansion strategy by strengthening the balance sheet. CEVA expects to list in the second quarter of 2018, subject to market conditions.


Trans Global Projects (TGP) has opened a new office in Istanbul, Turkey. It offers project logistics management, ship chartering, aviation logistics, supply chain management, logistics consultancy and procurement. It will be managed by Murat Aksu.


Project logistics specialist, KOG Worldwide is being rebranded as Rhenus Project Logistics following completion of integration with its German parent company. Rhenus Project Logistics now has 24 companies in 20 different countries including Europe, Asia North Africa and North America and with new sites recently opened in Chicago, Bremen and Tashkent.

The Transported Asset Protection Association’s (TAPA) says there has been a record take-up of its supply chain security standards, with TAPA-certified facilities and trucking operators now to be found in 60 countries. There was a 16.6% increase in the number of Facility Security Requirements certifications and a 41.5% growth in companies with Trucking Security Requirements certifications. As of the end of 2017, there were 645 FSR locations in EMEA and 126 companies meeting the TSR security standard.


Supply chain and logistics management services provider Scala has appointed Dave Howorth as executive director, responsible for enhancing UK and European capabilities and Phil Reuben, executive director, who will oversee global growth, including the development of a new Chinese office. Paul Bebbington, formerly from Kelloggs and Sanofi, and David Short, formerly from DHL, have also joined the consultant team.
