New chairman keen to get Bearsted blooming

Dementia help


THE parish council is to run “De- mentia Friends” sessions during the spring at local venues to helpspread the word of how local people can help those who are suffering with the condition. The council has already pledged


to become adementia-friendly com- munity andwould like engagement from local business by attending these sessions. If you would like to know more, please contact the parish office.


Summer play


INFORMATION on this summer’s playscheme and the booking form can be found at the parish council website or on Facebook. This year’s schemewill be held at


Roseacre Junior School between July 30 and August 10. The cost will be £9.50 per child per day.


Admin help


AN ADMINISTRATION assistant has been appointed to the parish council. Emma Hull, who previ- ouslyworked forKCC, joined clerk Sarah Lewis and assistant clerk Erin Sugden in the parish office inApril. Emma,who lives locally, ismarried and has a young daughter.


Mynn awards


NOMINATIONS for the respected Mynn Awards for unsung commu- nity heroes, have closed. The awards, named after the


cricketer and Bearsted resident Al- fredMynn, will be presented at the annual parishmeeting onMay 30.


Meeting dates


FULL councilmeetingswill be held on: June 5 (King George V Hall, Bearsted); July 10 (Madginford Hall);Aug 14 (KGV); Sept 18 (MH); Oct 23 (KGV) and Nov 27 (MH). Meetings start at 7.30pm, sharp.

THE website’s photographic competition continues to go from strength to strength and now the council is on the lookout for images fromaround the village and surrounding area which best sums up spring-time. Assistant clerk Erin Sugden said: “It is amazing howmany fantastic pho-

three categories – best kept garden, best kept hanging basket and best- kept commercial basket. ChairmanCllr Bollomhopes that


the range of categorieswill encour- age as many Bearsted residents as possible to take part. Cllr Bollom said: “I always


thought that Bearsted in Bloom was a really great event, andwhen I became chairman of the parish council I thought it would be a good idea to resurrect the competi- tion. “It’s a great, community way to


brighten up the village, and gets local people, shops, the pubs and


so on involved.” “There have been a few changes


in parish council personnel lately, and I suppose any fresh injection of enthusiasm will spark some new thoughts. We have just secured Barratts Landrover as our sponsor for Bearsted in Bloom and hope to make an official announcement about that in due course.” Cllr Bollom said that judging


would take place sometime in Au- gust. Assistant parish clerk Erin Sug-


den said: “I believe there have been some comments by residents to the effect that they wondered what had happened to the Bearsted in Bloom. “We’ve got a newchairman now


and he is really keen to drive the thing forward.” Full details of the rules and how


to enter will be published in Downs Mail and on the Bearsted Parish Council page in due course.

Lawyer new member of


the council LAWYER Vivien Bowles has been co-opted onto Bearsted Parish Council. She currently works for


Bromley Council in the chil- dren and adults legal team. She said in her application


statement: “I am keen on pre- serving the environment and can be seen jogging round Bearsted some mornings with a plastic bag, picking up litter. “Previously, I was Akela


with the Bearsted Scout Group when my children were younger, but left when I started studying law. “I became a lawyer later in


life whilst working for local solicitors Berry & Berry. “I am keen to ‘put some-


thing back’ into the commu- nity.”
