Tower bellswill soon be back to ring the changes
THE reign ofHenryVIII, the Eng- lish Civil War, The Gunpowder Plot, theGreat Fire of London and two World Wars have come and gone throughout the past five cen- turies. But up in the tower of StNicholas
Church in Otham, one bell in par- ticular has pealed across the pictur- esque Kentish village long before any of thosemomentous events. This reliable constant of village
life, however, fell silent lastNovem- ber as the threemost ancient of the half dozen bells – one ofwhichwas made by William Dawe around 1400 –were removed for repairs. At first, it was hoped they would
be back in time for Christmas, but a crackwas discovered in one and the work has been delayed further. “We’ve had some lovely com-
ments – people are really missing having the bells ringing,” tower captain – the bellringing leader at the church –MalwynWilliams said. “We had three newbells added a
couple of years ago but now we’ve had these three removed, so it’s all
(L-r) Bell-ringer DianeMitchell, church warden and bellringer DaveMitchell, tower secretary Betsy Piercey, Rev Stephen Hughes and tower captain Malwyn Williams, at St Nicholas Church
come to a halt. “It’ll be good to get back to nor-
mality and have the bells ringing on a Sunday, as well as for weddings and funerals – even birthdays.” MrWilliams and his bell-ringing
colleagues have been keeping their hands in by ringing at other local churches, but he cannot wait to get back toOtham. More than £11,000 has been raised
for the restoration works, which came at a higher cost than expected after the additional damage was
discovered. There have been delays beyond our control,” Mr Williams added. “We knew that the work needed
doing but when we had the other ones put in, we were not in a posi- tion to get themdone. “As I understand it, the other two
bells are ready to be brought back, but the one that is damaged has had to be sent toNorfolk for repairs. “But, hopefully, we’ll have them
all back soon – in time for thewed- ding season.”
