Josie brings passion to the council table

NEW parish councillor Josie Smith is Bearsted born and bred. Although the 25-year-oldmoved

intoMaidstone and away fromthe area where she grew up, she re- turned with her husband to settle not far fromthe village green. But it was the ever-present issue

of speeding traffic through the vil- lage that inspired Josie (pictured left) to “get up and do something about it” and approached Sarah Lewis, the parish clerk, about join- ing the team. She said: “Sarah carefully and

clearly explained the process, which involved putting together a personal statement and then pre- senting it to the full council. I was then voted in.” Josie was formally adopted by

the council during February’s full council meeting, where she spoke passionately about her roots. She toldmembers: “I believe that

Bearsted is amix of the old and the new culture…and I just wish the place can continue to be amazing.”

Summer play scheme dates

BEARSTED’S popular summer play schemewill be held between July 30 toAugust 10. The cost will be £9.50 per child

per day. Itwill be held atRoseacre Junior School. Staff seconded for the projectwill be paid the age ap- propriate national livingwage. Parish councillors agreed to ap-

point amanager for theMarket on the Green who, in the first year, will be paid per stall to incen- tivise greater take-up in the fu- ture. There is nomarket inAugust as

the date conflicts with the annual Music on the Green festival.

Later she said: “I have to say that

standing up and giving the presen- tationwas a little nerve-wracking – but that’s because I am passionate aboutwhere I live.” Josie said that rather than mak-

ing comments on socialmedia, res- idents should get in touchwith the parish council so that “issues can be dealtwith”. Josie added: “I am really looking

forward to helping the parish con- tinue tothriveandIwouldencourage othermembers of the community to consider joining the parish council.” At the same meeting, Michael

Bollom was co-opted on to the council. Local man Tony Grieve has also joined the parish council. Hewas unopposed having called a by-election. Co-opted onMarch 27 was Vivien Bowles, a lawyer who lives locally. Chairman Richard Camp has re-

signed from the council because of work and personal commitments. Cllr Bollom was elected as council chairman at theMarchmeeting.
