THE WORLD PREMIERE MUSICAL


Presented in association with Denver Center for the Performing Arts Theatre Company, American Mariachimade its debut at The Old Globe in March. Gather round for the story of a rare, all female Mariachi that begins with Lucha, an exhausted family caregiver, who desperately wants to bring a spark of joy and a moment of lucid memory to her ailing mother. When Lucha discovers she can reach her mother through music, a wild idea comes to her…a dream to form an all-girl mariachi band. Old Globe Artistic Director, Barry Edelstein welcomed Playwright José Cruz González to San Diego, noting, “José is a fixture on the Los Angeles theatre scene and a formidable voice in Latinx theatre nationwide. He makes his Globe debut with a story whose simple contours belie its deeper sophistication. It’s a story that’s easy to relate to for anyone who has cared for an ailing parent or who has overcome resistance in pursuit of a dream.” Edelstein continued, “American Mariachi emerges from a rich and complex culture that has been underrepresented on the Globe’s stages even though it’s a
