SAN DIEGO WOMEN’S CHORUS: VOICES

STRONGER THAN SILENCE, LOUDER THAN HATE Just off their exciting performances at the California Democratic Convention and

with pop sensation Demi Lovato in March, The San Diego Women’s Chorus is proud to present their spring concert onSunday, April 29at The Performing Arts Center at Lincoln High School. “The program’s aim is to weave together music representing the tapestry of the human experience from around the globe,” shares Artistic Director, Kathleen Hansen, “particularly in a world where too often the voices of the marginalized and less empowered are silenced.”Voices will feature music from popular Broadway showsHamilton andFun Home, pop pieces by Lady Gaga, Sara Bareilles, Rachel Platten and Cyndi Lauper, music by folk activists Pete Seeger and Holly Near, including beautiful choral compositions highlighting experiences of those in Appalachia and Brazil. Founded in 1987 by community activist Dr. Cynthia Lawrence, SDWC has grown from a group of 14 lesbians gathered around a piano in a private home to a thriving community with over 125 members who believe in the power of music and the power of women. For 30 years, SDWC has provided a safe space that encourages women’s creativity, celebrates

diversity, and inspires social action. For tickets and more information, go to sdwc.org.

TRANSGENDER DAY OF EMPOWERMENT 2018 The Transgender Day of Empowerment is held each year to empower, honor and celebrate the rich diversity of San Diego’s transgender community, as a way to raise visibility and awareness about the issues that they face and to commemorate those who have been lost to trans-phobic violence. Established by long-time San Diego community member Tracie Jada O’Brien, the event offers a special moment of connection and support for those who are regularly discriminated against, personally, professionally and by the legal system, which historically offers little precedence for protection. Held onFriday, April 13 at the San Diego LGBT Center, this year’s free and open to all program is youth-focused and will include speakers, entertainment, refreshments, awards and the announcement of the 4th Annual Tracie Jada O’Brien Transgender Student Scholarship in honor of aforementioned founder and activist. This event is free and open to all. For more information contact Connor Maddocks at cmaddocks@thecentersd.org or 619.692.2077 x109 at The Center or go to sdpride.org/tde.
