D. E. L. A. - F  D Commercial Fishing News

From the Director - Tomorrow is the fi rst day of Spring!

We made it through this winter, with three Nor’easters and one threatening us this week. With this being said, our DELA meeting has been re-scheduled to the middle of April. Can’t seem to land a good date to plan without the threat of a snow storm. We’re hoping that we can comfortably hold a meeting in April without having to cancel due to weather. Since our last report, we have had the

Maine Fishermen’s Forum, which also suf- fered from bad weather. It was a good Fo- rum, but we missed seeing all of our friends from the islands and the lower states. We hope everyone is doing well and just stayed home due to the storm. We’d like to Thank the Young Family, Chilloa, Mike and Loalee for their dedication with managing another successful Forum this year. Thank you to all that helped with our DELA booth, Barbara

Kent-Lawrence, President Hilton Turner, Ethan Turner, Vice President Bob Fortin, Sec/Treasurer, Mike Dassatt and our grand- daughters, Audrey and Hanna Perce. We also have a great Forum Board of Directors that work on this an entire year in advance. This is quite an undertaking! DELA has some new members that

we’d like to Welcome Aboard: Ronald Trundy, Jr., Steuben, Preston Alley, Beals, Brian Moore, Pembroke, Dr. Frank Wiswell, Jr., Castine and John Williams, Stonington. Thank you to all of you for your support, we can’t do it without you! With all that we are facing with this up-

coming season, we need your membership and support more than ever! The Endan- gered Whale issue is facing us once again. Think about this…..can you imaging setting your gear with ropeless traps? This is the next proposal that is in the making. You set your trap with GPS, with all of your rope

within the trap that has a fl oatation bag that will fl oat to the surface. This trigs the rope to only be used when the bag is fl oating to the surface. Then you have to put it all back in the trap and carefully set the trip wire for the next time around. How long do you think it will take to haul over 300 a day? Answer is, you can’t. This is just one of the ideas that we have seen along the way. We need your input with suggestions or

better put, solutions to how our industry is going to deal with our “co-existence” with whales and whale protectors. I honestly can’t think of anyone that wants to see these majestic animals suff er with entanglement. We are not the “bad guys.” So please, when there’s industry meetings concerning this issue, please become involved. We are masters of our own destiny in many ways and your participation plays a big part of successful solutions. We are also looking a off shore oil drill-

ing coming down the pike. Then we have the folks that want to run a pipeline out there for electrical power, and don’t forget the wind projects. I’m not trying to paint a dreary picture, but it seems that a lot of these projects aff ect traditional fi shing ground for our industry. How much can we give up before we are the “endangered ones?” This has been one of our mottos for years now, and we still stick to that opinion. Well, we are just about ready to start

getting our boats and gear ready for another season. We wish everyone a successful and safe season this year. The catch was down a

little last year, but if we manage our fi shing operations wisely, we should have a good season. Sometimes it is possible to do more with a little less, as they say. Let’s stay in touch with the Maine

Lobster Marketing Collaborative and see where the marketing takes us. We are always welcome to attend their meetings and I’m sure they will listen to any suggestions that we may have. After all, they are working for us, so we should be able to stay in touch and make suggestions. We need to stay involved with our own investments. Don’t forget, we still have some boat

shows coming up this spring! It won’t be long and the Maine Lobster Boat Races will be gearing up for another season, as well. With spring and summer on its way, we have a lot that we can look forward to. We don’t want to be all work and no play! Have a safe season and stay in touch,

Sheila
