LIVE 24-SEVEN GOLDEN BUZZER ON BGT A RECORD DEAL... THE LIST GOES ON!

17th and 18th April she’s going to open the show for me as well. I’m so excited to share it with her; it’s going to be a special moment.

The last few years you’ve had golden buzzer on BGT, most downloaded track of the summer, a record deal... the list goes on! Do you have to pinch yourself at the moment? That’s a crazy few years! I’m constantly bruised, I’m like a peach [laughing] the amount of pinching I do! I consider myself just a normal lad. It’s so surreal for me to be in situations that you’ve just mentioned, you know, Brit Nominee… I met Nile Rogers [big American record producer] and before we were introduced he said, “I know who you are” and [laughing] it’s just crazy, I’m still not over just how amazing this journey is. This album is only the beginning for me, I’d love to be writing for other artists and involved in writing songs for movies, I just want to be involved with music for the rest of my life.

How did the Leona Lewis thing come about? It was so natural the way we met. We were both working with this amazing prolific songwriter in America called Diane Warren and she was like, “Oh Leona has done a song, I think you’ll be perfect, so let me introduce you”. So we got introduced by email and we just hit it off, emailing backwards and forwards. I sent her some of my stuff, she sent me some of hers and she sent me You Are The Reason back and my jaw hit the floor! I honestly can’t believe that someone I’ve watched completely dominate the X-Factor and go on to be a global success, this pop star who’s gorgeous is singing a song that I’ve written. The most surreal experience ever! When I sang it on The One Show I was quite emotional, because it’s dedicated to my nan, it’s written as a tribute to my grandma and then there’s Leona Lewis singing it alongside me! I’m singing with a superstar on my own track that I’ve written myself, surreal. We get on sooo well. In fact the other day we were separated because we get on so well, too well…we’re silly! I like that! Yeah it was like, “Calum take a time out” [laughing].

So, with all these amazing milestones from record deal, platinum status for Dancing on My Own, have you indulged in treating yourself? On the record deal alone I would have drunk the bar dry! [laughing] [laughing] I try to, but the thing is with me that I take this job so seriously that if I’m working the next day I rein it in with soft drinks and an early night. I really want this, it’s not case of, I’ve had a hit so sit back, I want to do this for the rest of my life, so I’m quite good when it comes to celebrating. If I have two days free and so I can have a recovery day then I will celebrate, but it would be with family and friends around the dinner table and a nice meal to cherish the time I have with them, as to be honest it’s not often I get to these days. Nice… Yes, of course I like to buy myself something special, I bought

myself a Rolex and spent an hour and half debating whether to get it or not because the Yorkshire man in me was like, “You can’t buy that! You can’t justify that” [laughing]. It was a milestone moment – I’d just performed on Ellen and closed the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, so it was the first real present I bought myself after my label deal – so every now and then I’ll buy myself something nice and memorable!

Good on you – you deserve it! There’s a lot of love out there for you. You have supportive fans and some crazy fans; what’s the craziest fan experience so far? Umm, so yes [laughing] I have some very enthusiastic fans, that’s for sure [laughing]. I like what you did there, much nicer than me – I say crazy, you say enthusiastic! [laughing] [laughing] Do you like that? I’ve had my media training you see! I was performing at Ladies Day, it was quite a while ago, but it sticks in my memory and you’ll find out why… One of the ladies I met in the meet and greet must have been about 65 to 70 years old, she was very nice, a lovely lady and she said she was such a huge fan and she went to give me a kiss on lips, so I thought be respectful and I puckered up and I gave her a kiss on the lips and she errr, she put the tongue in! [Howling] Yikes! Oh yes, she went there, which was rather traumatising!

How are you finding touring, as you’re amidst a tour aren’t you? Yeah, I’m doing a promo tour across Germany. I’ve just been to a place called Baden Baden, which was really cool, then we fly to Australia and do Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and the Philippines for a little bit, which is so cool! The thing is for me that I’m now going to countries I’ve never been to before to sing to fans I’ve already got there which for me is…well my little bubble was in Hull and now I’m travelling to all these countries and meeting my supporters and it’s a really lovely feeling. Aww, well you enjoy and don’t change. You are so refreshing and down to earth and have a bl88dy lovely voice! [laughing] Love that – thank you for your support! I’d love you to come to one of my gigs if you can, it would be amazing! I’d love to do that – thanks! Love to see you there!
