CALUM IS DOWN TO EARTH COUPLED WITH A WICKED PERSONALITY...

got to about 70 and the record label said, ‘I think we need to get an album sorted’ [laughing].

So what’s inspired all that writing? You’ve had some amazing experiences over the last few years.. Oh my god I know… So what’s inspired the material? I think just life if I’m honest with you! I’ve written a lot about personal circumstances and issues I’ve gone through such as the issues I’ve had with my sexuality and growing up and this crazy career I’m in now. The album’s basically a journey really and the inspiration for the songs was just through my day to day life. We all go through heartbreak and love and jealousy and anger and all the emotions that make us human. That’s the inspiration for my album… So perfect title for it then…[laughing] Yes, [laughing] it fits really well!

Hello my darling, how are you? Aww what a welcome! I’m all the better for speaking to you Calum! Can I start with your new album, Only Human, am I right in saying there are 11 original tracks on there? Yeah, there are 11 original tracks, a Tiesto remix, two covers of ‘Dancing on my Own’ and a cover of a Bob Dylan song, ‘Not Dark Yet’, but yes, the 11 tracks are wholly original written by myself and my co-writer, so it’s really exciting!

What inspired the songs? Do you find it a hard process, writing, or does it come quite easy for you? Well, as this was my first album I was just writing, I wasn’t necessarily thinking about the album per se, I just wanted to write the best material I can and when we got into it the writing became a bit like therapy for me, so it actually became quite easy to write! You do get writer’s block, just like athletes get that mental wall, but for sure the concepts came easy and it all seemed to flow easily once I got into the process of writing. I love writing, I wrote about 70 songs… Crickey, 70, seriously! [Laughing] Yeah! I have albums three and four ready as well now so I’m just going to sit here and release albums [laughing] and not do any work [laughing]! I don’t know any different, I just kept writing and

So what are the standout tracks for you? Bit like trying to choose a favourite child, but which should we be looking out for? Yeah Katie, it is like picking a favourite child, as they’re all my little babies and they all mean something to me, but there are a couple that stand out to me. You Are The Reason is a really really special one, it was my first original release, so that’s a big deal for me. I had Leona Lewis on this record and so that’s a huge, huge deal. Then there’re songs like What I Miss Most, which I wrote about missing home and my home town of Hull and the people and the streets I grew up in, not necessarily one thing in particular, just missing home and I think plenty of people can relate to that. Also, I won’t Let You Down, a song that’s about me always being there for my little sister, so there’re some really special moments.

So your sister, how does she feel about your success? Street cred for any sibling! Oh my god yes, she’s so proud of me. You know the story that we both applied for the show and she didn’t get through at one point it was really, really difficult for her because she got me into singing – she inspired me to sing and helped me on this journey and she applies to be on the show and doesn’t get through and I pass with flying colours. It was quite difficult, but testimony to her character she said, ‘You know what, the best thing for me if I don’t get through is my big brother to get through…” Gorgeous girl… Yes, me and my sister are really close and she’s made me a very proud uncle to my nephew Oliver who I love soooo much, every spare minute I get I’m playing with him. This is why I wanted to tribute to her on my album, because now I’m in the best position to help her with her career and we’ve talked about duets and writing together and in fact on my home coming shows in Hull on
