Forwarding apprenticeship awaits final approval Over 12 months of hard work pays off for the Trailblazer group
It has been well documented that BIFA has been supporting a group of employers developing a relevant apprenticeship in the freight forwarding sector. We are delighted to announce that the
standard for the International Freight Forwarding Specialist Apprenticeship scheme is at the final stage, the End Point Assessment (EPA) plan. We anticipate that approval will be given in the coming weeks.
Set at Level 3 (A Level), with a
minimum duration of 18 months, the new apprenticeship will provide students with core knowledge and skills including: industry awareness, customs procedures and commercial.
The programme
At the beginning of the programme, apprentices will also be given one of three pathways to reflect the focus of our Members’ operations: air freight, ocean freight or road freight. Whichever pathway apprentices
take, specific knowledge and skills will be acquired in addition to the three mandatory modules. Carl Hobbis, BIFA training development manager, said: “We

are so pleased to have a relevant apprenticeship for the freight forwarding sector; it is needed more than ever now. Not only do we need to promote the industry as a career to young people, our Members tell us knowledge is leaving the industry and this apprenticeship will provide a way of training the forwarders and hopefully the leaders of the future.
Spread the word “We have lots planned to support Members in many ways and everyone will have to play their part up and down the country – we all need to spread the word about our industry to all the key stakeholders, schools, colleges, parents, teachers and so on. We have updated our website with some assets as a start. “To get this over the line has been a huge effort with plenty of determination. I would like to thank all the employers that have played their part. I am under no illusions, the hard work starts now.” You can view the standard and other useful material at
