Welcome to the March issue

Well, spring is certainly on it’s way and with some warmer weather coming our way, we’ve also seen some of the first foals on the ground – flick to page 31 to see the latest addition to Julie Pennell’s Nipna herd. This issue is also our stud and breeding focus, where we bring you a selection of some of the super native pony studs for those thinking about breeding – or for those considering expanding their current collection!

We also have an exclusive feature with Ann and Tony Halfpenny of the Tyan Stud. Many of you will have already heard that this year will be their final year of breeding Connemaras, so we reflect on some of their fantastic ponies and the legacy they are leaving behind. Our front cover star this month is Janine Sehne’s Tyan Ma’Lady, ridden and produced by Sue Deakin – who this March collected her Royal International Horse Show ticket.

We’ve been amazed at the amount of natives turning their hoof to eventing, and as well as Laura Pennell’s regular Wobbleberry blog, this issue we also introduce you to some of the riders preparing to take their native ponies to the Mitsubishi Motors Cup in May: Jessica Zajda, Rachael Cross, Jodie Caig, Kate Ingram and Charlotte Walters. We will catch up with them next issue to find out how their preparation is going.

Finally, we know that at this time of year, many of you will be preparing for the competition season, so not only have we brought you the latest products to help you shift that pesky winter coat (page 62), we also bring you the latest advice on how to maintain a ‘clean sport’, ensuring that you don’t get caught out when it comes to dope testing (page 32).

Enjoy your magazine, Rebecca
