THE GREENSBORO TIMES North Carolina A&T Expands Stem Ph.D. Program

7

By Robin White Goode There’s definitely something impressive about North Carolina A&T

State University. The Greensboro school has won, for two years in a row, the Black Enterprise BE Smart Hackathon held in Silicon Valley. One of its winning team members received 11 job offers from top tech companies; another is now a graduate student at Stanford, still another is at Microsoft.

But perhaps that’s what you would expect from the No. 1 producer

of African American graduates in engineering. Now the school has announced that it’s expanding its largest STEM

Ph.D. program, which will include data science and analytics. To learn more, read this post from the Journal of Blacks in Higher Education.

North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro is expanding its

largest Ph.D. program in a STEM discipline. The Ph.D. program in energy and environmental systems will now be known as the Ph.D. program in

applied science and technology. In addition to its previous concentration in atmospheric, environmental

and energy science, the expanded offering will have concentrations in applied physics, bioscience, applied chemistry, data science and analytics, and information technology and technology management.

The program now enrolls 60 students—about 15% of those pursuing doctoral degrees at North Carolina A&T State University. But the new concentrations are expected to enroll significantly more students in the years ahead.

The university previously offered nine doctoral degree programs. The new concentrations being introduced in applied science and technology will expand to 14 the total number of doctoral degrees offered at the university.
