SHORTFALL OF WOMEN THREATENS UK’S ENGINEERING ‘EDGE’

WOMEN IN POWER - a key element of the CP&De Conference held in Coventry, UK, on April 18th - 19th, 2018

Naomi Climer, President of the Institution of Engineering & Technology (IET), has publicly said that the ongoing shortfall of women not only threatens the UK’s ability to keep up with the rest of the world, but also affects the quality of the country’s inventions and solutions. “The shocking reality is that the UK

is missing out on half its potential engineering and technology workforce by failing to attract women,” Ms Climer said.

CHAIRPERSON OF ‘WOMEN IN POWER’ - JUDITH PACKER

One of three Engineering Directors in the Energy business for Parsons Brinckerhoff, Judith Packer was the high-profile Project Manager for the Whitegate 400MW Combined Cycle Gas Turbine Power Plant in Cork, Ireland from 2007 - 2010. Here, she was responsible for a €4 million management, construction and testing programme. She was also the key Project Manager behind the Ghana Domunli 'new concept' power plant in Ghana, designed to make electricity sources more accessible to everyone - especially women - in the country. She comments: "Even in the 21st

Century not all countries have got electricity. Women - especially in Africa and other areas of the Third World - are most affected by this. A number of key pilot programmes have shown you can radically improve the lives of women by introducing more accessible, inde-

WOMEN IN POWER (WIP) is a unique Conference being launched as a key section of the CP&De Conference & Exhibition being organised by Global Media Publishing Ltd. This will be held on 18th – 19th April 2018 at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry, UK. This premier energy conference &

exhibition focuses on engineering aspects of Independent Power, Gensets, CHP, District heating, battery and UPS systems. WOMEN IN POWER involves a number of key women speakers - power engineers and HR specialists and problem solvers - who will be presenting 20-minute talks/presentations about the problems involved with women achieving their maximum potential in industry in the 21st Century. This particular event is sure to attract a lot of media attention and the organisers are already projecting attendance figures of 500+ for attendees and delegates. WIP Conference Organiser Judith

Packer, CEng MIMechE, comments: "The idea behind WOMEN IN POWER is to inspire people (and companies) to

overcome gender bias and encourage diversity in the workplace, especially in the power heavy engineering sector. “A recent report from Engineering UK

has revealed a chronic shortage of engineers. The London-based not-for- profit organisation, which works in partnership with the engineering community to promote the vital role of engineers and engineering and to inspire the next generation, confirms that engineers make up almost 20% of the UK workforce - but we need more." Judith points out: "According to E-UK

between now and 2024 British industry needs to recruit 186,000 people a year with engineering skills to meet demand. Women currently make up just 9% of UK engineers – the lowest such percentage in Europe. With this WIP Conference we will be providing a platform for UK, European and other international companies to come together to try and resolve current issues about gender diversity, and to share learning and innovation to solve current and future power issues."
