Transformation: the Az Zour South 3 open cycle gas turbine power plant becomes a CCPP
Siemens has received an order to deliver an industrial steam turbine package to expand the Az Zour South 3 open cycle gas turbine power plant to a combined cycle power plant. The plant is located in Kuwait and is operated by the Ministry of Electricity & Water, reports WIP.

turbine package to expand the Az Zour South 3 open cycle gas turbine power plant to a combined cycle power plant. The plant is located in Kuwait and is operated by the Ministry of Electricity & Water (MEW). Siemens' customer is the
Chinese EPC contractor SEP- COIII. The expansion will increase the total installed capacity of the plant by 263 megawatts without using any additional gas. The combined cycle power
plant is expected to go into operation in mid-2019. The customer SEPCOIII has already used Siemens' steam turbine technology for three solar thermal power plants in

turbines. In addition to its high flexibility with respect to fuels and power output, the SGT- 2000E series is said to provide outstandingly low NOX and CO2 emission values, even in the part-load range. The SGT-2000E series does
not require cooling air holes in the blades. This means it can also process ash-producing fuels like heavy fuel oils, which would otherwise block the holes. The upstream external combustion chambers are maintenance-friendly and contribute to the high reliability of the hot gas
components. A variety of burners are available depending on the composition of the fuel. The SGT5-2000E is regarded an extremely well- proven machine for simple or combined-cycle processes with or without combined heat and power, and for all load ranges, particularly peak-load operation. The SGT5-2000E has a record for toughness and durability with more than 120 units in operation accounting for approximately 70,000 starts and more than 4,000,000 operating hours.
