hob had started the fire at the house at just after 9.30pmon Sun- day February 4. Firemen could see the flames

through the window of the house inMonroeWay, and forced a door

to get in. Crews used breathing apparatus

and a hose reel jet to put out the fire and used a large fan to clear the smoke. A spokesman said: “We urge

RESIDENTS and motorists face four months of traffic disruption while a new water main is laid in WestMalling. Contractors startedwork on Feb-

ruary 5 on the six-month scheme to lay more than a kilometre of new pipe to Trosley Water Treatment Works. It will require the closure of

Lavenders Road in stages for the first four months, before the pipe laying continues through private fields. Marcus Webb, the care home’s

owner of LavendersCareHome on the road said he had received as- surances fromthewater board that access will be maintained to the care home – an important consid- eration for emergency services. MrWebb said: “The fact that the

roadworks are not in one place but will be in a different part of the

road at various stages doesmake it more difficult to manage, but we are assured diversions will be in place to direct visitors and services to the home. “It will not be acceptable if this

access is not available around the clock.” Commenting on the £425,000

project, South East Water’s project manager Matthew Cooper said: “To keep the public and ourwork- force safe, a rolling road closure will be in place from the bridge over the A228 to the Lavenders Residential Home. “We understand roadworks can

be frustrating for local residents and motorists but know that the long-termbenefits of thisworkwill be felt for years to come.” The project forms part of a £424

million investment scheduled from 2015 to 2020.
