SIGNIFICANT BREAKTHROUGH ON ROAD TO NEW SUPERBUG-KILLING ANTIBIOTIC

NPA IN FOCUS Janice Oman

Scotland Representation Manager

Scientists working to develop a ‘game- changing’ new antibiotic have made a signifi cant advance towards creating commercially viable drug treatments by producing two simplifi ed synthetic versions of the substance which are just as potent at killing superbugs like MRSA as its natural form.

The breakthrough by researchers at the University of Lincoln, UK, marks another important step to realising the potential of teixobactin in aiding the global fi ght against antibiotic-resistant pathogens. Teixobactin is a recently

discovered natural antibiotic which many in the international scientifi c community believe could lead to creation of the fi rst commercially viable new antibiotic drug in 30 years.

The Lincoln team has successfully synthesised new simplifi ed versions of teixobactin which harness the same powerful antibiotic effects in a way that could be produced on a commercial scale. Their fi ndings were published in the Royal Society of Chemistry’s journal, Chemical Science.

Over £1.25 million savings1 for NHS Scotland with Zeroderma

As the year draws to a close, thoughts are turning to 2018 when the new NHS Scotland GP contract will come into effect. One of the priorities of the scheme is to provide pharmacy support to every GP practice, to enable fully integrated multi-disciplinary pharmacotherapy services.

This ambition is supported by the NHS GP Pharmacy Fund, to increase the number of pharmacists and pharmacy technicians working in GP practices over the next three years. The expectation is that this will reduce GP workload and improve patient care.

The contract acknowledges that community pharmacy provides minor ailment, public health, CMS and serial dispensing services and is shown as feeding into the integrated pharmacotherapy service via the GP practice pharmacy services.

By changing from branded emollients to the cost effective Zeroderma emollient range, NHS Scotland could save over £1.25 million a year and one Scottish Health Board could save over £235,000 p.a. without compromising on patient care.

The Zeroderma range offers products similar in formulation to around 60% of currently prescribed emollients and offers cost savings of up to 37%.

Many Health Boards and CCGs have adopted the Zeroderma range onto their formularies and cost savings are being made without compromising on patient care.

To find out how much your Health Board could save visit our QIPP and Emollients toolkit at qipp.zeroderma.co.uk, developed by Medicines Management teams it contains everything needed to implement product changes at practice level, as well as a guide to the savings your Health Board could make.

The evaluation of the pharmacy automation technology pilot and also the Inverclyde GP test pilot will inform the development of pharmacy services, including GP Practice Pharmacy in Scotland.

These new pharmacy roles - alongside the recently reviewed targets and indicators for the integration of health and social care - have the potential to change how community pharmacy is developed in NHS Primary Care.

The NPA is committed to supporting members through these changes and is eager to know what is happening in your locality. Please

contact j.oman@npa.co.uk.

January often brings a little headroom for refl ection and review of pharmacy processes. Perhaps the ideal time to start to look at standard operating procedures (SOPs). The NPA has produced a pack of essential SOPs that already includes Scotland specifi c SOPs, with more being planned.

The SOPs are free for members as an amendable downloadable zipfi le. If any member would prefer a hardcopy then please contact j.oman@npa.co.uk.

NPA Ask Your Pharmacist Week (AYP) resources were used by NPA members across Scotland to promote independent community pharmacy during Ask Your Pharmacist week in November.

The free resources included posters, bunting and balloons to encourage patients to ‘Discover their local pharmacy’. Many members shared their activities on social media.

As part of the AYP support, a Powerpoint presentation, colouring book and patient information leafl et are available for members to provide information on pharmacy services that patients may not be aware of.

These resources can be used throughout the year with any group of people. Please share how you use them or get in touch if you would like additional support in reaching out in your community.

Please do not hesitate to contact Janice on j.oman@npa.co.uk if you have any issues you would like to raise.
