CONTRACT
THE SCOTTISH GOVERNMENT AND BMA SCOTLAND HAVE PUBLISHED THEIR 2018 GENERAL MEDICAL SERVICES CONTRACT IN SCOTLAND AND THERE’S PLENTY OF INTEREST FOR COMMUNITY PHARMACY!
KEY ROLE FOR PHARMACY IN NEW GMS CONTRACT
P 10 - SCOTTISH PHARMACIST
harmacists throughout Scotland have voiced their support for the new GP General Medical Services (GMS) Contract, which recognises an increasingly clinical role for pharmacy in the delivery of care to patients.
The contract centres on the fact that, in order for GPs to be able to focus on the work that requires their skill and expertise, their current workload needs to be redistributed to a wider primary care multi-disciplinary team, with pharmacy playing a key role.
In the report, the Scottish Government and BMA Scotland highlighted the fact that the GP Pharmacy Fund has already enabled 160 pharmacists and 34 pharmacy technicians to be appointed to posts in over one third of GP practices across Scotland and so are now investing £12m in the fund during 2017/18 to increase the number of pharmacist training posts from 170 to 200 from 2018/19.
A re-design of services will now take place over a three-year period (2018 to 2021), with particular emphasis
on community treatment and care services and urgent care services.
Of primary interest to pharmacists is the fact that vaccinations are to move away from a model based on GP delivery to one based on NHS Board delivery through dedicated teams. The Vaccination Transformation Programme will take three years to complete and will have the following work streams:
• Pre-school programme • School based programme
