Making plans for the future

There are 350,000 older people currently living in care homes, often making the move in a time of crisis. Independent Age charity is urging families to make plans before there is no choice with these tips…

Finding a care home

1. Start early – start before there’s a need to move, giving you more choice and control should the time come

2. Talk to the council – Even if you think you’ll be paying your own fees, you should still ask your local council for a free care needs assessment

3. Is a care home really the best option? Care homes aren’t the only option. Sheltered or extra-care housing offers support with more independence than a care home, while home adaptations or disability equipment can enable people to live in their own home for longer

4. Research care home types – Make sure you know what you need before you start shortlisting

What to ask on a care home visit

1. Does this feel like somewhere I could live? Consider whether the home is clean and well-kept, if there are any unpleasant smells (there shouldn’t be), if staff are welcoming and the residents relaxed

2. What are the other residents like? Ask how many residents there are and what health conditions they have, asking yourself if you could socialise with them

3. What is staff turnover like? It’s likely staff will stay longer if they’re happy. Care homes with knowledgeable, experienced staff who get to know residents can make the difference between a house and a home. High staff turnover can suggest something is not quite right

4. Is there a registered manager on-site? The manager is often the most important staff member in a care home, and the one responsible for ensuring quality standards, and residents’ needs, are met. Again, a high manager turnover isn’t a good sign
