Valentine’s Day is just a heartbeat away. Jon Phipps checks out five of Kent’s most romantic venues…

We’ve all seen the Christmas movies that end with a snuggle in front of a fire, but as the new year breaks, it seems to be even colder, and with Valentine’s Day appearing on the horizon in February, it is easy to think of it as the most romantic time of the year.

There are so many wonderful places to visit in Kent with your significant other – and you don’t need tacky balloons and cards to make it a romantic day you won’t forget.

Here we pick five of the most romantic things you can do in the county to make this time of the year extra special.

Hever Castle

Love and romance is synonymous with one particular flower.

So it seems apt that you could spend a romantic day at a castle with a special garden dedicated to roses.

Like Leeds Castle, Hever Castle has its links with King Henry VIII, being a childhood home of his second wife Anne Boleyn and later lived in by his fourth wife, Catherine of Aragon.

There are more than 4,000 rose bushes in the gardens, including the castle’s own Hever Rose, which was launched by Dame Judy Dench in 2011. It can grow up to five foot tall and has a long flowering period. In total, there are more than 20,000 spring bulbs and 15,000 bedding plants, so whenever you visit the castle, you will see a breath-taking display of flowers. You can take part in a guided tour of the gardens, and step inside for a history lesson about the 700 years of the castle and its rich and varied former owners. And there is also a real hidden gem here too in the shape of the Miniature Model Houses.

Accessed via the Hever Shop, the unique collection of 1/12 scale houses have been designed to faithfully reflect architectural features and every aspect of the period they are from, which ranges from Tudor to Victorian times. Finish off with a romantic stroll and a hot drink and you and your partner will be left with warm and fond memories of Hever Castle. www.hevercastle.co.uk
