Woodbridge Cruising Club

WHEn the sailing season ends boat owners have to decide whether to stay in the water for the winter or whether to come out - think of Brexit without the vitriol – and we mark the occa- sion with ‘The Laying-Up sup- per – think of a Brexit Dinner – and this annual event which took place in the middle of October attracted a full house who enjoyed a sumptuous three course meal every bit as good as you’d find in Brussels or Stras- bourg. The first of the winter talks

took place earlier in the month and was given by John Johnson- allan who gave a very scholarly talk on the involvement of the navy in the arab Revolt of 1916/17. it was a fascinating talk which sparked a lively round of questions. a fortnight later we jumped

from Suez to the Deben, where a packed audience enjoyed anoth- er detailed account - this time of the history of Woodbridge as a

port and boat-building centre by the Doyen of the Deben, Robert Simper. Robert took us from viking times to the present day and it was surprising how little seemed to have changed; we still regard norfolk with suspicion, have battles with the French and worry about invasion by for- eigners. There are still smug- glers of one sort or another, and Theanchor (other pubs are also available) still seems to be the centre of port activities. He explained the importance of the pilots in getting ships safely over the bar at the entrance to the river when as many as 14 could come in on a single tide. The pilots even had their own style of boats which were designed for speed rather than manoeuvrabil- ity but were reputed never to go past a pub!

(alas they have now

all but died out!) Eventually the silting of the bar and river together with the arrival of the railway caused the port and ship- building activities to decline but

even today there are still com- mercial boats working in the river in addition to the numerous pleasure boats. Sunday mornings at the club

have always been popular for talks and socialising, but of late musical pursuits have started to appear. a group of ‘shanty(wo) men’ have been livening up the bar for several weeks and more recently another group have taken up the ukulele, although to

date they have not made a public appearance – still leaning on the lamp post at the corner of the street, no doubt! The RYa courses run by the

club take place over three week- ends in the Spring and there are still one or two places available for anyone interested in taking to the water.as with other aspects of the club further information is available on the website:- www. woodbridgecruisingclub.org

WOODBRiDgE Regatta 2017, sponsored bygotelee Solicitors, was one of the most successful in recent years, no doubt helped by fine weather. Everyone appeared to enjoy themselves both on and off the water and there was plenty of music and other activities to keep everyone entertained and busy all after- noon long. 1st Woodbridge Scouts organised the nowannu- al Raft Race which this year was the 10th time. The race was won by their ‘rivals’ 5th Woodbridge Sea Scouts so watch out for some more fierce competition next year. 1st Woodbridge Scouts were not disheartened though, as their ‘bucket collec- tion’ raised £304 which will no doubt be spent on much needed equipment. next year, 2018 sees the 180th

anniversary of the first Wood- bridge Regatta and it has run almost continuously since 1838. Other memorable events that year include the coronation of Queen victoria, the publication

FENNRIDGE SECURE AND AFFORDABLE

SELF STORAGE andy and Helen Rankin start- ed their Fennridge Ltd self

storage business at Bentwa- ters Parks, Rendlesham, in the summer of this year. We knew from our own experi- ence that we never had enough space to keep everything that we wanted to at home , and so we started at looking around for somewhere suitable to store all the extra clutter that we had accumulated over the years. it soon became appar- ent to us that there was noth- ing local that filled all the cri- teria that we were looking for in terms of security, conve- nience, accessibility, and above all , value for money. So we ended up sourcing our own ‘one trip’ shipping con- tainers, gave them a coat of anti condensation paint , found a good clean and level site at Bentwaters Parks, added security fencing, CCTv cameras, and access con- trolled gates, and began offer- ing storage space to the gen- eral public. So far, feedback from our

customers has been really positive, and we are aiming to continue to provide a friendly and reliable service. if you would like to find out more

then visit our website at www. fennridge.co.uk, or come and have a look round by contact- ing andy on 07976955150 or Helen on 07990537413.

Leftovers/scraps Whilst these may not be poisonous they may cause digestive upset and result in vomiting and or diarrhoea. Bones if eaten can splinter and may cause an obstruction requiring surgery to remove, so are best avoided! Overindulging could lead to potentially fatal bloat, so give treats sparingly.

In cats and dogs Holly and Ivy cause relatively mild symptoms, such as drooling, retching and sometimes vomiting. In rabbits however Ivy can cause muscle twitching, paralysis, convulsions and death. POISONOUS PLANTS
