AMETEK transient fault recorder - the new TR-3000 - designed for electrical utilities

TCG 3016 / CG132B – Gas engine efficiency goes digital, reports

Caterpillar Caterpillar Energy Solutions has

launched its new MWM TCG 3016 Cat CG132B series. The new gensets boast the highest efficiency in their output category. In natural gas operation, for example, the electrical efficiency reaches up to 43.5 percent. Moreover, the gensets are equipped with the new digital power plant control TPEM. With its new generation of gas gensets, Caterpillar Energy Solutions raises the bar in the distributed energy generation market. The newly developed gensets feature a unique combination of efficiency and robustness. One of the key benefits of the new gensets is their remarkable efficiency, which is said to be ‘unmatched in their class’. In natural gas operation, for example, the electrical efficiency reaches up to 43.5%. In the cogeneration of power and heat an overall efficiency of up to 90% can be achieved. Moreover, a greatly reduced oil consumption of less than 0.1 g/kWhel and longer oil change intervals make the operation of the gas gensets more economical. The operating period until the general overhaul has been stretched significantly, e.g. from 64,000 to 80,000 operating hours for natural gas applications. The generator is now flanged to the gas engine, and the vibration decoupling now takes place directly between the components and the base frame. In this way, the setup costs for the fundament are lower than for other gas engines.

released its new TR-3000 Multi-Function Recorder. The TR-3000 is said to have the most-comprehensive triggering and recording functions available to ensure users that they never miss a power system anomaly on their smart grid. The TR-3000 performs the job of several devices simultaneously, including transient fault and disturbance recorder, phasor measurement unit, power quality monitor, sequence of events recorder and continuous power logger, making it the ultimate tool for the electrical grid. The TR-3000 also features a Transient Oscillography mode that provides continuous waveform recording for up to four days to capture events too sensitive for user triggers or to extend pre-fault and post-fault data. The TR-3000 has multiple triggering and recording modes to help protection

engineers optimize their power systems to provide fault location, improve system reliability, shorten fault clearance times, and verify correct operation of switchgear and protection equipment. Its 256-GB, solid-state drive can be used for recording high-resolution data at longer durations, providing a complete view of system disturbances. The TR-3000 is said to be easy to configure, install and operate using the same field-proven display station software used in other AMETEK fault recorders. The TR-3000 goes one step further with all system parameters configured by software, including the selection of current and voltage inputs. The TR-3000 compact modular architecture is suited for small - and adaptable to large - applications by adding input modules & chassis to fit the user’s needs. www.ametekpower.com

Ovation™ turbine controls installed at new CCPP ENGIE has awarded Emerson a contract

“Emerson understands the impact

to replace legacy combustion turbine controls with Ovation™ turbine control technology at its DK6 800-MW combined-cycle power plant in Dunkirk, France. Existing controls on the plant’s two Alstom GT13 combustion turbines are obsolete and no longer supported by the vendor. The Ovation controls will be installed at each unit during a 13-day outage – a com- pressed timeframe for a turbine controls replacement project. This marks the first time a vendor other than the turbine OEM has been selected to retrofit GT13 combustion turbine controls. Ovation is an open system, which gives

DK6 personnel the ability to modify appli- cations or adapt the controls to accommodate future plant expansion, as well as new operation modes and fuels – all without the need for a costly service call.
