Captain Allen “Joe” Curtis ’97 Hired to Direct Career Services and Cooperative Education at Maine Maritime Academy

CASTINE—Maine Maritime Academy (MMA) Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, David Gardner, has announced that alumnus Joe Curtis has accepted the position of Director of Career Services and Cooperative Education for the college.
Captain Curtis earned his Bachelor of
Science degree in Marine Transportation and Nautical Science, graduating from the Academy in 1997. His shipping career in- cluded ten years at sea as master or offi cer on passenger ships, U.S. government vessels, and high-speed ferries, as well as nearly a decade managing ashore logistics, voyage planning/monitoring, and compliance for U.S. and multi-national shipping compa- nies. Most recently, Captain Curtis served as Operations Manager for Western Bulk Char- tering, a global operator of dry bulk vessels, in Seattle. He earned a Master’s of Science degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix in 2004. “Coming back to Maine Maritime
Academy is meaningful for me, both per- sonally and professionally,” said Captain Curtis from his offi ce in Quick Hall. “I’m literally coming home to family, and also connecting with the alumni and educational community where I began, so that I can further the college’s reputation from this side of the equation.” Curtis is a native of Readfi eld, Maine and attended Maranacook Community High School.
BLUE HILL - David William McGraw, 77, died October 30, 2017, at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston. He was born June 6, 1940, in Blue Hill, the son of William H. and Anna L. McGraw. Dave graduated from George Stevens
Academy and joined the Navy. He served aboard the USS Jallao SS.368. After serv- ing four years in the service he went to Billings, Montana, to work and attended college under the GI Bill. It was in Billings he married his high school sweetheart, Ann Wentworth, and they were married for 52 years. After graduation from college, he and Ann moved back to Maine. David started Blue Hill Plumbing and Heating, and Flye Point Marine where he built boats. A few years ago he had a rock wall built the length of his submarine on his property by a good friend, Kevin Piper. He had it dedicated to all submarines lost at sea. David was very proud of this wall. He is survived by his wife, Ann; two
nephews, Stephen and Joseph McGraw; several very special cousins; and two dear gals, Teri Slaven and Ciona Urbrich. At David’s request there will be no

Henry A. Scheel of Rockport, Maine
was one of America’s most respected naval architects and yacht designers. During his long and distinguished career, Mr. Scheel produced more than 250 complete designs which have been utilized by builders of sailboats and other craft in the U.S. and Eu- rope. To express his high regard for Maine Maritime Academy, Mr. Scheel left funds in 1994 to permanently endow scholarships for students in the three upper classes who best exemplify intellectual curiosity and achievement.
