Coast Guard medevacs injured fi sher- man 25 miles off Nantucket

BOSTON — The Coast Guard medevaced a seriously injured fi sherman Saturday from a boat 25 miles east of Nantucket, Massa- chusetts. A man aboard the fi shing vessel Hera

contacted watch-standers at Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England Saturday evening and reported another crewman suf- fered a head laceration, and was in immedi- ate need of professional medical care. A helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard

Air Station Cape Cod deployed to medevac the man, and fl ew him to Massachusetts General Hospital where his care was trans- ferred to medical personnel.

Rhode Island’s tall ship loses power, hits multiple boats before grounding in Newport Harbor

BOSTON — Coast Guard Station Castle Hill provided a safety zone in Newport Harbor, Rhode Island, Sunday night (15 October) after a tall ship lost power and hit multiple other boats before coming to rest near Perrotti Park. The 200-foot SSV Oliver Hazard Perry,

an educational tall ship homeported in New- port, was leaving Bowen’s Wharf Seafood Festival at Bowen’s Wharf for Fort Adams with 12 crewmembers aboard when it lost power and began to drift after one of her dock lines fouled her two propellers. A 911 dispatcher alerted Coast Guard

watchstanders to the incident at about 6:15 p.m.

Two response boat crews from Station

Castle Hill immediately deployed to the scene, where personnel from the Narragan-

sett Bay Task Force also helped with the response. There are no reported injuries or pollu-

tion. The incident is under investigation. On Monday, October 16, after a diver

cleared the propellers and both engines were operational, Oliver Hazard Perry Rhode Island coordinated with the U.S. Coast Guard to assess the situation and move the ship safely to its berth with USCG-required tugboat assistance. The relocation was com- pleted by 5 p.m. Perry’s next educational voyage is

scheduled for January, 2018 and all of her 2018 voyages and plans for festival partic- ipation are expected to continue as sched- uled. Perry will be required by the Coast Guard to undergo sea trials later this week to ensure the ongoing safety of the ship and crew.

SSV Oliver Hazard Perry is not a

replica, but a modern, steel-hulled vessel purpose-built for training and education to the highest modern safety standards (accom- modating 49 people overnight, including 17 professional crew). The fi rst sea-going full-rigged Tall Ship to be built in America in over a hundred years, she is USCG-ap- proved and all who participate in her sailing programs become part of the crew. No one is a passenger. Instead, everyone lives aboard and works side-by-side with professional crew to learn square-rig seamanship, includ- ing bracing the yards, steering the ship and even going aloft if they wish to do so.
