The new US Embassy building currently under construction next to the Thames.
A high performance Building Facade & advanced PV panels are being installed at the new US Embassy
The new US Embassy at Nine Elms, London, features a high performance building façade which uses multiple layer laminated glazing with an outer scrim of new, pressurized ETFE (ethylene tetrafluo- roethylene) pillows on the east, west and south façades to screen excessive solar gain and glare while ensuring a uniform distribution of daylight to the building interior. The glazing is low-iron to promote trans- parency. The ETFE scrim provides a second air gap and enhanced resistance to thermal transfer. Cooling for the Embassy building will be generated by absorption chillers which use waste heat from the natural- gas fuelled combined heating-power (CHP) system. The latest photovoltaic (PV) panels will be used as an
effective, low-maintenance method of producing electricity on site. These HIT (Heterojunction with intrinsic thin-layer) PV
Because of the sensitive nature of electronic communi- cations and other systems onsite, the Embassy UPS systems have been specified to be intrinsically versatile, compact and parallelable. According to the TIER stan- dard, key system availability should fall between 99.9 and 99.999%: downtime is not an option. The UPS units will serve a wide spectrum of servers, databases and other electron- ic equipment. These include telecommunications and IT. Also being installed onsite
are Low Voltage Cables, Medium Voltage Cables, and High Voltage Cables. A high- voltage cable (HV cable) is a cable being used for electric power transmission at high voltage. This type of cable includes a conductor and insulation, and is suitable for being run underground or underwater.
differing types are expected to be deployed in line with a variety of applications in instruments, ignition systems, and AC and DC power trans- mission. In all applications, the cable joints and terminals have been designed to control the high-voltage stress to prevent breakdown of the insulation. The high-voltage cable is

likely to have a metallic shield layer over the insulation, connected to the ground and designed to equalize the dielectric stress on the insula- tion layer. For circuits operating at or above 2,000 volts between conductors, a conductive shield may surround each insulated conductor. This equalizes electrical stress on the cable insulation. In line with many Embassy buildings around the world the structure is likely to have
ly applied to enclosures to isolate electrical devices from the 'outside world', and to cables to isolate wires from the environment through which the cable runs. Electromagnetic shielding designed to block radio frequency electromagnetic radiation is also known as RF shielding. This type of shield- ing can reduce the coupling of radio waves, electromagnetic fields and electrostatic fields. The current US Embassy, in Grosvenor Square, was regarded as ‘being too small and too old-fashioned’ as it was built in the 1950s, and fraught with security issues for the modern world. The new ‘high-tech’
Embassy will feature a bomb- proof exterior and anti-ram barriers thanks to the work of architect and designer Kieran Timberlake.

panels will be located on the roof of the Chancery building and access pavilions at optimum orientation. The HIT solar cell is made of a thin mono crystalline silicon wafer surrounded by ultra-thin amorphous silicon layers. This product is said to provide the industry's leading performance and value using state-of-the-art manufactur- ing techniques. HIT is said to be able to generate more clean energy than other conventional crystalline solar cells. HIT solar modules are regarded as 100% emission free,
have no moving parts and produce no
noise. The dimensions of the HIT modules allow space-saving installation and achievement of maximum output power possible on given roof area. Even at high temperatures, the HIT solar cell can
maintain higher efficiency than a conventional crystalline silicon solar
cell. The HIT cell and module have very high conversion efficiency in mass production. .
HIT solar panels from Sony will be used extensively around the structure of the Embassy to generate power.
