SEPTEMBER 2017 • COUNTRY LIFE IN BC

Strong showing for Hereford Bonanza

Wildfires temper attendance but the show must go on by DAVID SCHMIDT

ABBOTSFORD – Alberta dominates Canada’s cattle industry, and it likewise had the largest representation at the Hereford Bonanza in Abbotsford, July 17-21. BC nevertheless had a strong showing despite the wildfires that prevented many participants from attending. Organized jointly by the

Canadian Hereford Association (CHA) and the Canadian Junior Hereford Association, the Bonanza aims to encourage junior Hereford breeders across the country. The week-long event circulates through the provinces and includes a variety of individual and team competitions as well as the CHA annual meeting, workshops and seminars. It culminates with a large Hereford show open only to junior Hereford breeders from across Canada. Cayley Brown was

projected to be one of the stars of the BC contingent, but the wildfires throughout central BC prevented her family from leaving their ranch in Princeton. Despite her absence, BC participants made a good showing. As she judged the open

show, judge Emily Griffiths of Indiana stressed the importance of events like the Hereford Bonanza. “If we don’t have the next

generation to raise the cattle, it won’t matter,” she stated. After looking at more than 80 animals, Griffiths selected BNC Glenless 429 Nellie 71D, a yearling heifer shown by Emma Lees of Saskatchewan, as the grand champion Hereford female and WJP Chianti MVP 123C, a two-year- old cow shown by Billy Paul of Aldergrove, as the reserve grand champion female. Ryder Nelson of Alberta was a one-man wrecking crew in the bull classes, earning the grand championship with his yearling, GH 5Z Marten’s Rock 344D, and the reserve grand championship with his calf, GH 377X Eclipse 27E.

Nelson and his siblings also topped the group-of-three class, placing just ahead of Billy Paul and his brother Ken. Billy was named the show’s premier breeder and placed first in the intermediate one- page advertising competition while Ken was first in intermediate judging. Makenna Reimer of

Abbotsford received a championship in the open show, gaining the reserve bull calf award for MCH 11X Epic 65E. She also placed first in the junior hand-drawn art category while her sister Julianna topped the peewee advertising competition. In other competitions, Evan

Warkentin of Vanderhoof placed first in junior prepared speeches and Bailey and
