AUTOGENOUS SHRINKAGE Autogenous shrinkage can occur in wet conditions in contradiction to drying shrinkage, which occurs only in dry conditions. This can result in debonding of the grout from the steel in grouted connections and consequently poor load transfer of the dynamic loads that act on the foundations in offshore wind turbine installations. The autogenous shrinkage of MasterFlow 9800 was measured by using the Schleibinger shrinkage drain method; the results are shown.

also upgraded and improved its Recirculating Jet Mixer (RJM) technology from the experience of using MasterFlow 9800. The delivery rates when using MasterFlow 9800 with an RJM are upwards of 20m³/hr and therefore faster grouting of the annulus can be achieved, saving valuable offshore operating days.


SPECIFICATIONS AND CERTIFICATION MasterFlow 9800 gives an improved level of job site safety; unlike a big-bag solution, there is no requirement for craneage and the movement of big bags at head height. On the Beatrice OWF project, this has saved in the region of 7,500 crane movements, reducing risk.


MasterFlow 9800 was developed to allow fast and secure installation and this is achieved by better early strength development reducing the risk of early-age cycling. According to the DNV guideline DNV-OS-J101, only a limited relative movement between the grouted steel members is allowed during the initial curing of the grout and during the grout hardening period to ensure a proper load transfer between the different steel members of the foundation. The strength development of MasterFlow 9800 at early ages was tested at varying temperatures from 2°C to 20°C as shown in Figure 3 below.


BULK DELIVERY CONCEPT The unique bulk delivery concept of MasterFlow 9800 allows for improved secure delivery and will not require expensive dockside storage warehousing. As part of the product development and to meet the requirement of the DNV TAC certification, a system has been developed to give complete traceability of the grout from manufacturing plant to grouted connection.

The combination of bulk delivery of the product and FoundOcean’s Recirculating Jet Mixer (RJM) technology allows the possibility of transfusing and the mixing of the grout from the manufacturing plant to the grouted connection in a closed system, reducing the risk of dust contamination and waste.


MasterFlow 9800 has been third-party validated to meet the requirements of German BSH approval – Z.i.E. process. In 2016, the product became the only


PRODUCE PLACEMENT Only four months after its introduction in 2015 it was chosen by Van Oord for the installation of the 150 foundations at the Gemini Offshore Windfarm by FoundOcean using its specialised grouting equipment. In 2016, Jun de Nul chose MasterFlow 9800 for the 50


foundations at the Noblewind Offshore Windfarm.


In 2017, Seaway Heavy Lifting has contracted FoundOcean for the grouting of the 84 wind turbine jacket foundations and two offshore transmission module (OTM) jackets at the Beatrice offshore windfarm, for which the bulk-supplied grout was chosen by the client. As the product meets the design criteria for the grouted connection, its proven track record and third-party validation (Type Approval Certificate to DNV-OS-C502) giving improved levels of operational safety and cost reduction.

The development of MasterFlow 9800 demonstrates BASF‘s continuing commitment to develop revolutionary materials and installation methods to meet their customers’ requirements and contribute towards cost reduction of offshore wind energy.
