GROUTING

IMPROVING BIG-BAG PERFORMANCE FOR OFFSHORE WIND GROUTING

BASF entered the offshore wind grouting market with an industry standard big-bag solution for the supply of ultra- high strength grouts for grouted structural connections

The need for the big bags was due to the formulation of the grouts involving a number of constituent materials with different densities which segregated during transport, therefore requiring the complete mixing of a bag to ensure a uniform and consistent mix of grout.

IDENTIFYING A NEED In line with the cost reduction requirements for offshore wind energy and the need to find inventive solutions, BASF, in conjunction with its licensed contractor FoundOcean, identified a need for a bulk-supplied grout that would give the following advantages over existing big-bag solutions…

» Perfect filling of the grouted connection

» Long term durability » Fast and secure installation

» Increased site safety » Improved logistics » Tractability of grout » Third-party validation and certification » Cost reduction

MASTERFLOW 98000 PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS To achieve perfect filling of the grouted connection and long-term durability, MasterFlow 9800 was developed to give outstanding fatigue resistance and long- term volume stability. Fatigue occurs when a material is subjected to repeated loading and unloading. If the loads are at a certain threshold, microscopic cracks will begin to form. Eventually, a crack will reach a critical size and the structure will then suddenly fracture.

The fatigue behaviour of MasterFlow 9800 was observed over a number of

cycles to failure under cyclic loading corresponding with the prediction according to DNV-OS-C505, as shown.

MasterFlow 9800 has very low autogenous shrinkage, which gives a lower modulus of elasticity, resulting in a less brittle grouted connection. Autogenous shrinkage is the result of the chemical reaction between water and a cementitious material. The volume
