DEMENTIA sufferers, carers, fami- lies and people interested in the ill- ness attended a meeting organised by Snodland Medical Practice Patient Participation Group (PPG) at Snodland Com- munity Centre. The speakers were Dr Ananth


Puranik, a consultant psychiatrist at Bay TreeHouse, Maidstone Hospi- tal, Dr Rebecca Prince, who works at the practice and Irene Jeffrey of Crossroads Care, a charity which helps carers; the charity used to be based in Snodland and is now in Wateringbury. Claire Mcafee and Natalie Blakely of Tonbridge and Malling BoroughCouncil’s ‘One You’ team, described the various healthy living initiatives operating in the borough, including walks, diet, weight loss and quizzes. Puranik gave an informative talk on the many types of dementia, af- fecting some 840,000 sufferers in the UK. He explained how to recognise achangeinaperson’s awareness over a period of at least six months and how the diagnosis of dementia involved the exclusion of other conditions. Dr Prince talked about the surgery’s role in the diagnosis of the condition, the need for blood


tests and the involvement of a de- mentia specialist nurse. She also spoke of the surgery's involvement in the health needs, both physical and emotional, of dementia pa- tients, their families and carers. Irene Jeffrey explained the serv-


ices provided by Crossroads Care which supports carers who pro- vide palliative care to families, friends or neighbours, including short breaks, meal preparation, bathing and assistance with ac- cess to social activities. John Stockham, chairman of the


PPG, said: “What an interesting evening. All the speakers provided a different aspect to dementia, how to recognise it, how to manage it and the brilliant support services available.”
