THE NATIONAL YOUNG MATHEMATICIANS’ AWARDS – INSPIRING THE NEXT

GENERATION OF MATHEMATICIANS! Explore Learning are inviting pupils across the UK to compete in the only team maths competition for primary schools in the country, run in collaboration with the NRICH project at the University of Cambridge. Each school entering a team will have the unique opportunity to tackle a never-before-seen mathematical problem. Teams will battle through the heats, on 8th, 9th and 29th November to win a place at the Grand Final to be held in Cambridge on Wednesday 13th December.

The annual competition is free to enter with the main aim of inspiring the next generation of mathematicians. This year’s ambassador is Kjartan Poskitt, TV presenter and author of the Murderous Maths series. He will be at the Grand Final with a hilarious maths routine for the finalists, as well as huge prize bundles from the likes of Meccano, Kidzania, Artline and Sum Fun!

Kjartan Poskitt says: “I’m so pleased to be involved with this year’s competition. I’ve heard from so many kids who have taken part in the past and they’ve all loved it and come away feeling very proud of themselves. Explore Learning and NRICH are always coming up with fun new maths challenges, and of course nothing beats the feeling of getting an answer right! So, don’t miss this chance to join in, you’ll probably discover you’ve got skills you didn’t even know about!”

If you are a parent of a maths whizz, speak to their school about registering a team. Deadline to register is Friday 20th October.

Schools can register today at www.explorelearning.co.uk/youngmathematicians SET SAIL WITH SANTA ABOARD A

THE NEED TO SPEAK

OUT AND STAY SAFE Did you know that in every primary school class, an average of at least two children have suffered abuse or neglect? It is a shocking statistic but thanks to the NSPCC’s Speak Out Stay Safe service, children are being empowered to speak out and seek help. It delivers essential safeguarding information to children aged four to 11 in a lively, memorable way. Child-friendly, interactive assemblies and workshops teach children about abuse in all its forms and how to spot the signs. The service also helps children understand who they can turn to for help, including the NSPCC’s Childline service. It is delivered by specially trained volunteers who know how important it is for children to have this knowledge. The service spoke to 1,711,275 children in 7,756 schools across the UK throughout 2016/17. Now the NSPCC needs your help to reach even more children. By signing up to become a volunteer for Speak Out Stay Safe, you can help the NSPCC change lives by delivering these vital assemblies and workshops. For more information on becoming a volunteer in your local area, please contact them directly - they would love to hear from you. T: 0121 227 7577 W:www.nspcc.org.uk/volunteer
