President’s Column
to remind everyone that the majority of the committee are volunteers from the industry who give up their personal time to be able to do work for the Institute. These people come from the membership so the Institute also needs the support of the membership. It is a perfect circular relationship and fits perfectly with the mission statement and goals of the Institute.
This also means that branches and council both need the support of the membership and we are always looking for people to come forward and contribute to the Institute and its members.
This can be done in many ways from providing content such as technical papers or interesting articles for the journal to getting involved with your local branch. You could also consider getting involved with council or simply encouraging other members to contribute or even encouraging colleagues to become members. Of course, the industry itself and the organisations and companies within our industry have also been massive supporters of the Institute and they continue to help in many ways from advertising revenue to providing venues, from allowing their employees time for Institute activities to providing technical papers. There truly are many ways in which the Institute is supported and we are very grateful for all support. Companies also understand that if there is a benefit to their employees, our members, then ultimately there will be a benefit to their businesses however intangible those benefits may be.
If you have been thinking about how to get more involved from either a personal or corporate point of view then feel free to speak with us. If you have ideas on what you would like to see from the Institute then, again, feel free to speak with us. We can only provide the services you want if the ideas are there and we are always very keen to hear new ideas, suggestions and comment.

Perhaps we should consider some of that a little deeper. If we summarise the goal of the Institute as benefitting its members then surely this implies a at least a knock on effect to benefit the companies and organisations that our members work for? Are employers a part of that perfect circle by default without even realising it? Some may think not and others may think that a member driven organisation should not need to consider the employers of its members however, I think it is absolutely essential and proper that an organisation such as the Institute should indeed consider the employers. Why, you may ask? It’s quite simple, if employers did not support the Institute or our members, then there would not be many members if any.
Looking back on my own career, I am very grateful not only to the Institute but also to the employers that I have worked for who have positively supported and encouraged Institute. I recall almost 30 years ago being told by my first refractories employer that I should “join the Institute and attend every event”. It was almost a condition of employment such was the enthusiasm at the time.
I certainly would encourage every employer in the industry to encourage its staff to become members of the Institute and get involved where possible.
After all, if this is a reciprocal relationship between members, their employers and the Institute then surely it
is to the
benefit of all the people and stakeholders involved and I would like to thank employers for their contributions to this…. and encourage them to continue to do so in any way they can.
