Chalk sculptor backs bid to buy White Cliffs

AN80-year-old chalk sculptor from Maidstone has offered his newest collection to the National Trust in an effort to save England’s most iconic landscape. Charlie Samuell (pictured) says he

felt compelled to offer his support to the charity’s £1m campaign to buy more of the White Cliffs of Dover after learning it could be under threat of development. The pensioner, from Murdoch

Chase, Coxheath, says if the trust is successful in buying the land, he will offer his much-loved “Guardian of the Cliffs” sculptures – hewn from Dover chalk – to sit back in its natu- ral environment. Charlie said: “I totally support the National Trust’s campaign and if they can raise money from the sale of my sculptures I’ll be more than happy. It is vital that as the cliffs re- cede, the National Trust continues to replace and protect this coastline and ensures this beauty spot stays an historic landmark. “I’d also be delighted if the statue

I carved from Dover chalk was able to return to where itwas found.”

Forces sweetheart Vera Lynn is among others who have offered their support to the National Trust’s campaign. Mr Samuell, who was evacuated

from London to NorthWales during the war, added “This is an iconic landscape, whether for troops re- turning from conflict or holiday- makers returning by ferry, this is the first thing you see and immediately you feel ‘I’m home’; it is the Gateway to England.”

MrSamuell,wholived for 28 years

in Staplehurst before moving to Coxheath, started carving chalk as a boy when he lived at Box Hill. He studied at Morley College in London during the 1970s but was forced to abandon any hope of turning pro- fessional after starting a family. Having taken up his childhood

hobby in retirement, he will be ex- hibiting his work at the Riverside Gallery, next to Yalding Bridge, throughout June 2018.
