Guide to FPCA Choirs

Fourth in a series on groups that can connect you to the life of the church BY JOHN ROWLEY

What a joy it is to be part of a group of friends who love to sing and participate in the music programs of our church. Don’t feel you need to have perfect pitch or able to read music unaccompanied. That’s what rehearsals are for, and fortunately, we have talented directors and strong section leaders to help us. So please consider coming to one of the rehearsals and joining a group that you would enjoy.

Chancel Choir: Te Chancel Choir generally sings twice a month at the 10:30 a.m. traditional service. Teir repertoire includes traditional anthems, spirituals, psalms, and some contemporary pieces. Rehearsals are Wednesdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. All teens and adults are welcome to participate.

Cantate Domino: Tis group generally sings music from the Renaissance period, but not exclusively. Some ability to read music is desirable but not absolutely necessary. Adults and teens are welcome. Te group rehearses on select Sundays from 3 to 4 p.m. in the chapel and sings on select Sundays at the 10:30 a.m. service.

Adult Handbells: A variety of music is played by this handbell choir at the 10:30 a.m. traditional service. Members are usually able to read music, as the pieces tend to be intricate and challenging. Rehearsals are held on Tursdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the chancel.

Youth Handbells: Tis is a training choir for youth in 5th to 12th

grades. Considerable time is spent during rehearsal

teaching music-reading and ringing skills according to the needs of participants. While the group is mainly made up of youth, adults who wish to learn are also welcome to participate. Rehearsals are held every Sunday afternoon from 4 to 5 p.m. in the chancel.

FPCA’s Youth Choir performs during a 2016 service in the sanctuary. Te choir generally sings in worship once a month and goes on tour in the spring.

Te Belles: Tis group of dedicated handbell ringers focuses on outreach in the community. Twice a year they bring joy to assisted-living facilities and nursing homes in the area. Tey also ring occasionally at the 10:30 a.m. service and rehearse every Wednesday morning from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.

DIG Crew: Children in Kindergarten to 5th grade learn songs

at our Sunday morning faith formation ministry for children called DIG and sing in worship on the last Sunday of each sermon series, sharing their gift of music. Tey also sing at the Christmas Eve 4 p.m. Family Worship Service.

Youth Choir: Tis choir is open to all youth in grades 6 to 12. Rehearsals are held Sundays from 5 to 6:15 p.m., prior to youth fellowship. Te choir prepares anthems for presentation to the congregation once each month. Tis school year they will travel to Richmond, Virginia, where they will perform six times during a three-day tour.
