MEMBER NEWS PR firm earns industry acclaim
Plymouth PR agency Briscoe French is celebrating being shortlisted for three industry awards designed to showcase the best public relations campaigns in the south and south west. The firm, which has an office at Plymouth Science Park, has made it to
the final cut for awards recognising professional excellence in social media, corporate and business communications, and issues, crisis and reputation management. The awards are run by the Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR) and will be held in Bristol this autumn. Last year, Briscoe French picked up a silver CIPR award for the Most
Outstanding PR Consultancy in the South of England and Channel Islands region. It also took home gold for its work on a special publication for a local authority in Hampshire, and a silver for an exhibition it organised at the European Commission in Brussels. This year, the firm has made it to the finals with campaigns crafted for a firm of local solicitors and a community sports centre.
Claire Hall, who heads up Briscoe French’s operations in Devon, said:
“This is the fifth consecutive year we have reached the finals of the CIPR PRide awards in our region so the whole team is thrilled. “The award submissions are vigorously vetted before reaching this stage
to make sure they use best practice public relations methods, achieving real results. Having our work put through this process by judges and peers from other regions is a valuable endorsement. “Our campaigns shortlisted this year are for new clients, which is
testament to the quick results we can achieve. These clients have seen the value of our expertise and have continued to work with us beyond their initial brief to support their wider business objectives.” “The competition for the CIPR PRide awards is always tough, so
whatever the outcome later this year we are feeling positive about this achievement and continuing to grow our business within the south west region.”

Do you have what it takes to be a leader?
Devon Chamber member Rotary District 1175 represents the numerous clubs in our region and participates in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), an intensive leadership experience organised by worldwide Rotary clubs and districts, where those who take part will develop skills as a leader while having fun. This annual event comprises a
programme of activities and tasks aimed at developing team building skills, along with a series of projects and lectures from eminent high-achieving members of the South West community. In July, young adults between the
ages of 18 and 28 from Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly, Devon and part of Somerset took part in the local Rotary District 1175 RYLA event at Brimpts Farm, in Dartmeet.
Participants completed a one-
week intensive residential course, where the objective was to inspire and develop the confidence and ability of the young people taking part, to teach them to become
leaders in their communities and encourage them to plan for themselves. They experienced hands-on learning of how to run a meeting, save a life or organise their thoughts before speaking in public – which can be a life-changing experience for many. RYLA participants are
nominated by local Rotary Clubs. Those who are selected are part or fully financed by their employers or family, with the

nominating Rotary Club providing any necessary additional funding. Peter Berry, who organises the
local RYLA event, said: “Many enlightened employers in the area recognise the excellent value of the course and the improved performance of the participants when they return to their companies.” He added that young people “discover strategies for becoming a dynamic leader and have opportunities to learn from community leaders, inspirational speakers, and peer mentors”.
Sam Cross, from the Rotary Club of Plymouth explained that the process of application for Rotary funding is very straightforward
and the Rotary Clubs welcome working with employers to find the right candidates. Her club part- funded two candidates, Jon Dicken from the Plymouth and Cornwall Wing Air Cadets and Lee Abbas from YMCA Plymouth. Jon said that attending RYLA had been a life- changing experience for him, an opportunity that he would not have had without Rotary’s support. In his day-job he is a primary school teacher and he believes that the RYLA experience has equipped him with the skills to engage better with his students.
