The future of UK aviation
The Department for Transport (DfT) has recently launched the process to develop a new aviation strategy, with the publication of a call for evidence document which seeks views on the proposed approach for developing a new aviation strategy for the UK. The new strategy includes looking closely at how to
make the best use of existing capacity at airports throughout the UK for passengers and cargo. It will look beyond a new runway at Heathrow and consider how the whole sector might respond to a range of technological, security, environmental and customer service challenges. The strategy has one headline aim, supported by six
more specific objectives: to achieve a safe, secure and sustainable aviation sector that meets the needs of consumers and of a global, outward-looking Britain. The strategy objectives are to:
• help the aviation industry work for its customers, • ensure a safe and secure way to travel,
• build a global and connected Britain, • encourage competitive markets, • support growth while tackling environmental impacts, • develop innovation, technology and skills. This call for evidence begins the consultation
process and will be followed by a series of consultations that will run throughout 2017 and 2018, culminating in the launch of the aviation strategy at the end of 2018. The DFT’s document sets out the overall aims and provides an opportunity for all stakeholders to influence the issues that will be explored through the development of the strategy. The consultation is therefore an opportunity for
freight forwarders to ensure that important matters related to the air freight industry in the UK are adequately considered. The initial consultation will close on the 13 October 2017. The consultation document can be downloaded at:
