Corstorphine Community Policing Team Given that we recently
carried out
our national
counter
terrorism awareness week, and in the light of the recent events in Manchester and London, I thought this would be a good time to go over the most up to date advice from Police Scotland in response to what you should do if you have concerns regarding an individual or worries about what you would do if you were caught up in an incident such as those highlighted above.
The most important thing to remember is “be alert, not alarmed”. The chances of being caught up in a terrorist attack are extremely unlikely. Police Scotland have extensive plans in place should something of this nature happen and officers are always ready to react quickly to mitigate any threat to public safety.
The Police will act on any report of suspicious behaviour. If you see someone or know someone who you have concerns about, or who might be susceptible to radicalisation of any kind, you can report this by calling the Police on ‘101’ or ‘999’in an emergency. You can also report any concerns via the anti-terrorist hotline on 0800 789 321.
Lastly, if you do find yourself facing down a weapons or firearms attack, the
advice from the Police and the National Counter Terrorism Security Office is to remember the stay safe principles “Run, Hide and Tell”.
Run - Escape if you can, consider safest options, is there a safe route? Don’t expose yourself to greater danger. Insist others leave with you.
Hide - If you cannot RUN, HIDE, if you can see the attacker they may be able to see you, find cover from gunfire e.g. substantial brickwork / heavy reinforced walls, be aware of your exits, don’t get trapped, be quiet and silence your phone, Lock / barricade yourself in, Move away from the door
Tell – Call 999 and provide as much detail as possible about locations of the attackers, descriptions, numbers involved and weapons, casualties etc.
As I mentioned, it’s unlikely you will ever need this advice, but its always good to know! You can get more advice on this topic and many others from the Police Scotland web site.
Remember… “be alert, not alarmed”. Police Scotland will continue working to keep you and your neighbourhood safe.
