Does social media help us to connect with people?
Today we use social media to hang out with our mates, meet new friends or reconnect with old ones. As a result, a big part of our social lives is spent in front of a screen. In this chapter we’ll look at the many ways that we use social media to connect with people, and assess pros and cons of socialising online.
Our online identity
Social media sites encourage us to create an online identity by sharing personal details, blogging about our lives, uploading pictures and videos, and searching for and forming groups with others like ourselves. Increasingly, people can share their profiles, photos, videos and blogs between different social media sites, such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, to form one overall online identity.
Privacy issues
This is convenient, but there are dangers with sharing so much personal information with such a wide group of people: it can reveal things that you’d rather school officials or future employers didn’t know. For example, a promising candidate for an internship at a business in Chicago, USA, was turned down because of references to drug-taking found on his Facebook page.
Posting information about yourself can also put your personal safety at risk. The information could end up in the hands of strangers who might want to hurt you or steal from you. One teenager from New York, USA, posted on various social media sites that her family were heading off on vacation, giving burglars a green light to break into her home.
EARTH DEBATES AGAINST THE ODDS
This series tells the amazing stories of inspiring people who have made a difference and changed the world, despite the odds stacked against them. Age 8 – 11.
DID YOU KNOW?
Facebook, the social networking site, was founded in 2004 by Harvard University student Mark Zuckerburg. By June 2013 it had 1.11 billion users.
Most social media sites allow you to select your privacy settings, so you can control how much other people know about you.
WHAT DO YOU THINK?
Social media sites can be a great way to share photographs and keep your friends updated.
