FROMTHE

Like most boys, when Iwas a youngster and my school gave me apiece of paper to take home about some event coming up –aschool trip or aparents evening –the piece of paper was often completely forgotten, staying in my schoolbag never to see the light of day unless my mum rummaged around to find it amongst the sticky sweet wrappers and assorted small boy junk lurking in the depths of the bag. Sometimes, if the event was not something that in my opinion (aged 7) my parents needed to know about, the piece of paper bypassed my bag entirely on its way into the bin.

It seems that many (invariably male) RAF personnel are still small children

at heart when it comes to bringing home to the family information the RAF has gone to much trouble to produce and ask them to pass on to their loved ones. Whether its stuff that will affect families directly or just stuff for their information, it invariably ends up staying at the bottom of that schoolbag. Spouses and partners then remain in ignorance or,worse still, find out via social media groups, where rumour and counter-rumour often hold sway over the facts.

So Imake absolutely no apology for including in this edition of ‘Envoy’ acouple of articles about initiatives that are happening that you either should or might want to know about, whether you are serving yourself or family of aserving member of

the RAF.I’m very grateful to AVM Chis Elliott, the Chief of Staff for Personnel and Air Secretary at HQ Air,for finding time in her busy schedule to write for us. As aworking mum herself, she absolutely gets many of the issues faced by spouses and partners and tells us about what the RAF is doing to try to help our people cope.
