August 2017 Your Opinion Matters You are appreciated Ms Jones, I recently read your

editorial (volume 11/ number 10). I too, love people, love the truth and enjoy reading the Hampton Roads Messenger. I am very involved in my community as well. Tere are literally thousands of businesses in our area that should be advertising with you. We wonder why so many new ventures fail. In part because people have no idea they exist. A Facebook page is a nice touch, along with other social media outlets, but why not reach another targeted audience with YOUR

readers. Your paper is well written, thoughtful and does provide "personal and professional empowerment." Keep giving back. We are all better for it.

My web based business,

locallegislature.net, will be conducting a soſt launch in September. Te Hampton Roads Messenger will be on the top of our list for advertisers.

Keep doing good work. Many of

us are glad you chose the path you did. Charles S. Gates, DTM President Local Legislature, LLC "Remember, we're not global, we're local...locallegislature.net"

Phone scammers pose as Sheriff deputy

Te Hampton Sheriff’s Office

wants the public to be aware of an aggressive phone scam targeting Hampton and surrounding area citizens. Several Hampton citizens have recently received calls from impersonators falsely identifying themselves as deputies and employees of the Hampton Sheriff’s Department.

Te caller falsely identifies

himself as Sergeant Fuller of the Hampton Sheriff’s Department and is insistent that there are warrants out for his victims arrest be-cause of a missed jury service date. To avoid arrest they request immediate payment with the purchase of money cards to pay fines in excess of $1,000. Tey have even made pleas to meet victims personally in locations to finalize the transaction

and satisfy the arrest warrant THIS CALL IS A SCAM!! Te collection of fines will never

be requested over the telephone, but through a summons served by your local Sheriff’s Office. If you get this call, don’t give out any information and never meet any caller anywhere seeking to collect funds to avoid an arrest warrant.

Please share this information

to protect other persons from being scammed. Tis scam has been duplicated across the country, so do not assume that your com-munity will not be targeted.

National League of Cities to highlight need for workforce development

WASHINGTON, D.C. -

Recently, Congressman Bobby Scott (VA-03), the Ranking Member of the Committee on Education and the Workforce, hosted a policy briefing in coordination with the National League of Cities (NLC) on their recent report "The Future of Work in Cities." The

policy discussion highlighted

strategies that can provide support to cities and the economic impacts of workforce development at the federal level.

The testimony briefing native, included from Dr. Patricia P.

Woodbury, Councilmember, Newport News, Virginia. A South Hampton

Dr. Woodbury programs

of provided

an in-depth analysis on the trends and real-world implications of workforce development.

"Investing in our workforce

is now more important than ever," said Rep. Scott. "The technological innovations that make our day-to-day lives easier also present a challenge to maintaining job growth in our cities.

Driverless cars and other

innovations present the same threats to jobs that ATM's posed to bank tellers and self-check-in kiosks posed to jobs at

airports. When jobs disappear,

problems appear: crime, drug use, and teen pregnancy in addition to loss of homes and an eroding tax base. When technology threatens to displace workers, we must invest in a workforce development system that can quickly respond and prepare workers for a changing labor market."
