Market on the Green bid to boost numbers

Storage plea

ROSEACRE Raiders FC has asked for permission to place a shipping container at the Elizabeth Harvie field as its present storage facility is due to be demolished. Councillors agreed to assist in the

club’s quest but ruled out a con- tainer of that nature, despite how well-camouflaged it might be. Temporary planning permission

may be required from the borough council.

Defibrillators

LIFE-SAVING defibrillators are sit- uated at the tennis club, social club on The Green and at the WI in Bearsted. The machines are becoming an increasingly widespread as a means of treating stricken heart pa- tients by giving them an electrical jolt. They are often used while paramedics are en route to a pa- tient.

Library news

THE parish council agreed not to cancel a £5 per month arrangement with the local library which has been closed in recent months. Anew, temporary facility is to be opened at the rail station while re- pairs are carried out on the build- ing overlooking The Green.

Parking plan

THE parish council is to seek two parking spaces at the Madginford Hall, where its offices are based. The clerk, who will soon have an assistant, is finding it hard to park due to the popularity of the hall and library next door. Pressure has increased on available spaces as the primary school has grown in size.

Relief road

BEARSTED borough councillors Mike Cuming, Denis Spooner and Val Springett attended the joint transportation board (JTB) meeting at the town hall on July 12, to con- tribute to the debate about a possi- ble Leeds-Langley relief road.

THE Farmers’ Market is to undergo a relaunch in a bid to halt declining footfall and stall-holder numbers. Traders have been tempted away

to other areas such asWest Malling in the past 12 to 18 months. Acting chairman of the commu- nications and community commit- tee, Cllr Fiona Redman, told colleagues: “It’s dying a death at the moment.” Nowit is to be rebranded as Mar-

ket on the Green, which means it can offer a wider variety of food and artisan stalls. It will switch from Sundays to Saturdays. Bearsted events organiser Bar-

bara Dunford surveyed existing stallholders following the depar- ture of a few market traders. Her report stated: “It was high- lighted that although there are many other Sunday markets lo- cally, few are held on Saturdays. “Current and previous stall hold-

ers were asked for their opinions on expanding the market and in- creasing footfall, and a positive re- sponse was given to holding the market on Saturdays.” Traders liked the idea of themes

such asValentine’s Day, Easter and Mothering Sunday. The August market will be held

on the same day as Music on the Green on August 27, when ham-

pers will be on sale to festival- goers.

When the new Market on the

Green starts, it will be monitored using key performance indicators (KPIs), said Cllr Redman. When the cricket season restarts

in April 2018, there “might be a safety issue” but this will be as- sessed. It will also clash with the WI mar-

ket staged indoor at the hall. But Cllr Redman said: “I don’t

think it’s a big problem. I think that you can have two markets on at the same time –we’ll to give it a try.” Cllr Fabienne Hughes warned that an increased number of stalls

Speed system is discussed

BOROUGHcouncillorVal Springett said she has been given some “very basic information” about an automatic plate number recognition (APNR) device which can log details of speeding cars. Operated by the parish council, if adopted, the mounted device would

be supported of the local authority. Its system record the details of the offender’s vehicles and the speed, so that a letter can be sent to those who persistently break limits. Cllr Springett told councillors: “Although there is a cost in operating

these systems, I do think it worthy of consideration for use in Ware Street, possibly in conjunction with Thurnham Parish Council, as I un- derstand it can bemoved, enabling it to be shared with other parishes.”

FA Cup match for village team

BEARSTED Football Club will play Eastbourne Town FC in the FA Cup onAugust 5 for the first time in its 122-year history. The club is running a coach for 77 supporters to the Sussex coast, picking up at the Otham Sports Ground on match day morning. Bearsted, which plays in the Kent Invicta League, is currently im- proving its Honey Lane ground with plans for a second 57-seat stand and floodlighting. It has also signed a new 20-year lease.

will inevitably lead to more traffic driving across The Green. There may be resurfacing required if the ground is soggy, she said. Pitch fees will be £30 for electri- cally-powered stalls and £15 for all others. Traders may be offered a loyalty scheme if they book their pitches three months ahead. They would then receive the fourth month free of charge. Market on the Green will run

from 10am to 2.30pm on the fourth Saturday of the month from Sep- tember this year. Cllr Terry O’Sullivan will be

asked to carry out a risk assessment on where best to place the pitches.

Campus site roundabout

CLLR Denis Spooner told parish councillors a bid by Maidstone Borough Council and Kent County Council has been lodged with the Department for Trans- port (DfT) to upgrade the Kent Medical Campus site round- abouts. The enlarged roundabouts

would cost about £4m. Borough member Cllr Spooner

said: “This will help improve junction capacity and traffic flow to accommodate the increased traffic associated with the Kent Medical Campus as well as hous- ing growth in the area.” MBC will contribute £500,000 recouped from developers. Con- struction will start in 2018.
