Crossing first priority for highways funding
THE environment committee, having reviewed all the bids re- ceived for funding from the dedi- cated highways projects budget, has identified the safer crossing point on Grovewood Drive North as thatwarranting the highest pri- ority on the grounds of public safety and benefit to the commu- nity. The September parish council meeting will therefore be asked for
Badge of office BOXLEY Parish Council has pur- chased a pendant for the chairman or vice-chairman towear at official functions. Chairman Bob Hinder is pic-
tured wearing the new badge of office.
Fireswarning
RESIDENTS are reminded, and are asked to tell their children, that fires are not allowed in the woods. If you see fires in the woods,
please ask anyone there to put the fire out, but only if you feel comfort- able doing so. Report the fire to the fire service, and if it is duringweek- days, to the parish office. If you have seen evidence of fires,
please notify the parish office so that the problem can be monitored. Please note: local Scout groups do not camp or start fires in the woods and any person stating oth- erwise is being untruthful.
Speed limit
A MEETING with KCC officers identified that the speed reduction onWalderslade Woods Road, from 60 to 50mph was not being pro- gressed. In 2016, a petitionwas submitted
to KCC and in February 2017, the work was agreed. A lack of funds meant that it was then dropped. The parish council has applied to County Cllr Paul Carter to fund the work, which it is estimated will cost at least £3,000.
22 Maidstone East August 2017 Fresh look for
red phone box BOXLEY Society has applied to BT for a supply of paint to spruce up the village’s Type K6 red telephone box.
The box, which is next to the
Kings Arm’s pub was designed in 1935 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. The parish council has now
agreed a grant of £320 to have the metalwork prepared and primed for the painting by volunteers. The telephone box, which is listed,
is still operational but is now more pink than red.
MP hears traffic issues
THE parish council met with Helen Whately MP to discuss traffic is- sues faced by residents. Everyone agreed that the addi-
tional housing development in Maidstone and the proposed schools would severely affect Grove Green. In Walderslade and Lordswood,
the development around the parish boundary could bring the area to a halt unless capacity at the M2 junc- tion 3 roundaboutswas increased.
Members also highlighted the problems concerning the crash records of the A229 and the fact that any problem on this road, the M2 or M20 immediately affected the local surrounding areas, clog- ging up the road network. Mrs Whately and members felt
that the meeting had been con- structive and she would be contact- ing her neighbouring MPs and also asking County Cllr Paul Carter for a meeting.
Plan to improveM2 junction
IT WAS reported that KCC was investigating the possibility of a free flow slip onto theM2London-bound at junction 3, to see if this would improve congestion. The county council hoped to investigate and produce a report in
the autumn.
its agreement to this being pro- gressed. Once likely costs are known, the committee will move on to the next item on the list offer- ing the most benefit at commensu- rate cost. Yellow lines on Grovewood Drive South were voted the second highest priority. Members were unwilling to fund work whilst the planning applica- tion for the STEM (Science, Tech- nology, Engineering and Maths)
School was outstanding as, if ap- proved, a Section 278 agreement would fund the installation of yel- low lines. CllrWendy Hinder said: “Yellow lines are badly needed, but the parish council has to be pru- dent with the public purse and so it is a bit of await and see game. “Should the planning application
be refused, the parish council will revisit the situation and will keep a careful eye on what is going on.”
Students help out in parish
THEparish office supports the Med- way EducationBusinessPartnership by hosting two work experience stu- dents for aweek each year. Each student spends time with the
staff, learning about the work of the parish, the problems residents face, answering telephones etc. Chairman Bob Hinder said: “It is
vital that our young people get the chance to experience work condi- tions and the parish council is proud to be part of the partnership. “It is disrupting to the office, but
the staff take it in their stride and re- port back that they often learn from the young people.” Students are set a number of tasks
and a recent placementwas asked to produce a guide to reporting high- way problems on the KCCwebsite. Two “Eight Easy Steps” guides, re- porting highway problems to KCC and flytipping/litter to MBC, are nowavailable on the parish council’s website.
Spring bulbs
THE parish council is considering buying sacks of bulbs to provide colour next spring and has asked for ideas for possible planting sites. Suggested locations are New Cut
Road, Grovewood Drive North, Round Wood roundabout, Boxley Village Green and a verge at Spen- low Drive. The council would also like to hear
from volunteerswhowould be will- ing to plant bulbs if permission is granted.
