Brooding

Brooding is an exciting time - the chicks are just beginning to explore and show an

interest in their surroundings. Providing the correct temperature is paramount at this stage. Here is an overview of the products

that your customers need and the important parts to remember.

Plan ahead...it’s important to have everything ready well ahead of time, before the chicks

are hatched. Ensure that the area is clean, dry, draft proof, covered with wood shavings and the feeders/drinkers are in place.

Which type of brooder? We supply a variety of electric brooder systems both

self-contained and ‘open’ comfort brooders. Self-contained units are perfect for classroom settings where space is an issue and overall, cleaning and management is easier. It is also worth considering the size of the self- contained brooders as they can only hold a limited amount of chicks and they soon

grow! Alternatives like our Chicktec® Comfort Brooders are beneficial to the chicks as they are able to remove themselves from the heat when they need to.

Which Infra-Red bulb? When informing your customers it’s important to know the

differences between the bulbs. PAR 38 bulbs offer excellent durability and efficiency.

Hard glass bulbs are resistant to water splashes and the ruby version is more suitable to poultry as they offer a less intense light which reduces stress levels in the chicks. Plus, they do not destroy vitamin B in the same way the bright white light does. Ceramic bulbs offer heat but no light making them the best choice for small birds as when used in conjunction with another light source you are able to provide 24hr heat and normal daily night patterns which results in more

restful chicks. These bulbs also do not destroy vitamin B.

What about flooring? Wood shavings are

an excellent low cost option for flooring. It is important to never use sawdust as a substitute as the dust will stick to the droppings - a dust free option is a must.
