How to change the world… one step at a time

Move on ‘throwaway society’

SOUTH West Green MEP Molly Scott Cato has welcomed European Parliament backing for a Green initiative which aims to extend the life of consumer products.

She said: ‘Our seas are awash with plastic and incinerators are mushrooming around the South West – just two very obvious signs of our throw-away society.

‘I am delighted therefore that, by a large majority, MEPs have backed a Green initia- tive challenging “planned obsolescence” – the deliberate policy used by manufacturers to create consumer goods that rapidly be- come obsolete and so require replacing. ‘We can no longer ignore the environmen- tal, social and health consequences of this damaging attitude.

‘Such an approach leads to resource de- pletion, high transport emissions and of course mountains of waste. ‘We need a much greater emphasis on reuse and repair and tax incentives to en- courage this. ‘We must particularly look at ways to tackle software obsolescence, which determines the lifetime of many consumer goods. ‘Tackling our disposable culture can also have huge economic benefits by reducing costs for consumers and creating new jobs in the “circular economy”.

‘MEPs have acknowledged we need to act; we now need the European Commission to take on board the calls of the Parliament and support a new, more sustainable approach to consumer products.’

Park has become more inclusive

WORKS have been completed at Victo- ria Park, Redruth, to install two pieces of inclusive play equipment plus a new ramped access.

The park was officially reopened by Ian Thomas, Cornwall Councillor for Redruth South, who worked alongside the Friends of Victoria Park to cam- paign for equipment to make the park more inclusive, affording children of all abilities the chance to visit the park. The works have been funded by Corn- wall Council and Tesco Bags of Help.

Tesco store voted to award the grant to the project to purchase the inclusive play equipment, and additional funds to create the ramped access were made available through Cornwall Council Section 106 monies, arising from new developments within the area. Cllr Thomas said: ‘I am excited to be able to reopen the park with the new equipment which will allow children of all ages and abilities to be able to enjoy the park.’
